Not at coinbase anymore. Started new job in June. This company doesn’t automatically give holidays off because it’s a global company, we’re supposed to put in PTO for standard bank holidays in our country (I’m in US). Manager said on 1:1 that I’m requesting too much PTO for the year. We have “unlimited” PTO. For 2022, I put in PTO for all US holidays since joining (July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving+day after since that’s been standard other places I’ve worked, Christmas), two important Jewish holidays (I’m Jewish), two long weekends (Friday+Monday), one random day and one week conference. 17 total including standard US holidays. Is that too much? TC: 200k
I would bring a dictionary and look up the word of unlimited in 1 on 1.
Yea that seems pretty reasonable is part of it includes holidays. Your manager is wrong, ask for more time off
That’s when you realize that unlimited PTO is a scam and ploy to not pay out if you quit. It also pressures employees to take less time off.
Yeah I’m always clear when I join unlimited PTO companies that I intend to follow the PTO allowance of my first job that had finite days (20 plus holidays and a few “personal days” and it’s never been a problem
Right. Been there, done that. Honestly if I ever join a company that boasts about unlimited, I’m going to get it in writing on time off. Your boss seems like a pain in the ass, imo. You should be getting 6-8 weeks off per year if they actually lived up to their unlimited offering.
It’s reasonable and this is why unlimited PTO is the biggest lie
Yeah now I’m worried because I have a weeklong family trip planned in January plus an extremely relevant industry conference in spring, plus the standard holidays that I’m not giving up…
Don’t give up anything. Most companies which have PTO give 11-15 days. You are asking 2 days more. Tell him you think it’s fair and the company policy allows for it so you will be sticking to your plans
Boss is a jerk.
Boss has been decidedly not a jerk in every other respect, have to hand it to him
Sorry, but if boss says that you taking 17 days off per year is a problem, then he is being a jerk. In Canada, the minimum that any full-time employee gets is 10 statutory holidays, plus 10 vacation days. Most people in tech start at 15 vacation days. And it goes up from there based upon experience. I would never even consider the US bank holidays as a part of PTO.
Unlimited PTO is scam. They will not pay unused days when you quit. And put high pressure to not use it while you work there. Having said that, most companies are fine upto 30 days per year excluding federal holidays.
To be clear, in total most companies are fine with around 40 ish including federal holidays?
What? Including holidays you should be doing 6 weeks at a minimum (30 days). I even get more time off than that at Amazon…
Damn ok. Truthfully I’ll probably just take more “unplanned” “sick” days where I don’t tell people in advance….
Yeah most US companies have 7-10 holidays. You usually get 3-4 weeks of PTO at any decent company. So you’re talking at the absolute minimum , 22 days (4.5 weeks). Anything less than that would make the “unlimited” PTO a scam. But don’t worry, if they really mean it you should be good to go. Also, correction I said 36 days but it’s 30. For reference, I have 40 days off a year at Amazon. 7 holidays 15 vacation days 6 personal days 12 wellness days, last Friday of the month in my org
We have 11 holidays off and unlimited PTO. It’s probably manager dependent but mine doesn’t even blink at 20 PTO days a year (so over 30 days total including holidays). We have teammates who schedule a month-long summer vacation every year, others break it up into smaller chunks.
Your manager is a joke
