At Cisco we have 20 days PTO (4 weeks basically) and if you have anything that's not spent when you leave the company you'll get monetary compensation. I struggle to understand how these startups with "unlimited PTO" that barely give you 3 weeks (because apparently it is never a good tike to go on vacation) are better.
That’s exactly why these companies offer unlimited vacation
So do you guys actually prefer unlimited vacation policy ? I always feel like that if you don't have a set number of days you end up using very little...
I agree
I think the reason for it is so they don't have to track it and pay out when you leave
I work at one now, usually means you can take 2 or 3 weeks but it's just a scam so they don't have to pay you if you take no vacation. I prefer a stated allotment
At Adobe we have what you describe -- that is, we don't accumulate or track PTO. If you want paid time off, just take it. The only caveat is that your manager should be ok with it. Meaning, if you have a cool manager (like mine) then you're all set. I don't have any paperwork to fill out, digital or otherwise. No red tape. It's pretty nice. And Adobe gives us additional office closures as well. In the US, we have 18 days of office closure this year (this includes major US national holidays). These are paid days off. Some people may have a hard time taking PTO days off if they aren't being counted or tracked, perhaps because they don't want to appear as being lazy? But once you get used to it, it's pretty awesome. Here is what our benefits site states: "There’s no specified amount of vacation days or paid time off for full-time exempt Adobe employees, so we encourage you to work directly with your manager to arrange the time off you need when you need. At Adobe, we believe that taking time off is essential to the health and productivity of every employee". Link: https://benefits.adobe.com/time-off/vacation-and-paid-holidays#paidtimeoff
This is identical to Linkedin and is why I’d go to adobe rather than a company in FANG
If you have unlimited vacation, how many of the days you take off are paid?
Apparently all, according to the company.
Amzn didn’t have payouts for unused vacation. So before flipping them the birdie used my PTO on a golf vacation.
If you work in CA and accrue vacation, by law they must pay unused time out when you leave the company. That is not the case in WA, unfortunately.
Capital One does 15 days, +5 you can buy. Unused PTO will rollover the first 5 and cash out the rest at the start of the year. I prefer earned/tracked PTO to untracked/“Unlimited”. Some of my teammates never go on vacation and I wouldn’t want to feel pressured to take less time off as a result.
For us it depends on the person. Half the company takes a solid 2 months or more a year which leaves the other half to pick up the slack by working 7 days/week.
That's how CenturyLink Cloud felt - unlimited overtime but everyone is already overworked, so vacation means coworkers hate you.
LinkedIn has unlimited. As long as you don't let it impact your work, your team, or the bigger goals they don't seem to care. Ives taken 3 weeks this year so far and had about 9 days of company holiday.
Wow and all of it paid or it will go unpaid after a while? I'm thinking of a case when someone would get married and might want a few extra days off. 3 weeks is already high. I came across a startup that offers 4 weeks
It's all paid.
