Update: Should I volunteer for layoff/saverance?

Update: So layoff did happen but I wasn’t laidoff even after volubteering to my manager. turned out my manager was already on exit route (seems like as an exec he got advanced notice and time before layoff). I did secure a FANG PM job and starting soon. Now a lot of Disney employees are furloughed as of end of next week. Sounds like a thriller story but my timing turned out to be equisite and I feel lucky unlike manybof my colleagues who got furloughed 😢 So there is layoff coming at Disney here as result of Fox synergy... obviously i heard from other colleagues. I have made up my mind to find a new job and have been preparing sincey last few months for the upcoming interviews at FANG and similar companies... should i volunteer for layoff and get some free time for prep and cushion for the job hunt process? does anyone know how and who to have this conversation with? i dont know much about saverance yet, whats the standard? what should i be careful about? YoE: 13 (4 at D) TC:280k PS: i have a family: working spouse and a 3yr old. not bad on savings to survive 6 months. TIA

Get offer before layoff, get laid off, enjoy severance and go to a cruise in Bahamas.. when you come back you will have a job to look forward too

What if they don’t plan to let him go?

Uber CrQE65 Jan 30, 2020

How about getting an offer and starting late? You get your time off, severance and peace of mind during your time off knowing you have an offer!

Trying for an offer before lay-off but don’t want to rush for interviews and don’t get any.. layoffs are more likely to be by mid to end of Feb and I am sure I won’t have any offer without miracle by then 🤦🏽‍♂️🙇

Uber CrQE65 Jan 30, 2020

Get a non FAANG for offer peace of mind while you prepare and get a good offer.

Microsoft ERlc58 Feb 2, 2020

I agree with uber, peace of mind is absolutely massive

Lock and load offers before walking from current job... seems silly to walk away from a steady check, unless the situation is THAT bad at moment..

$280k in Florida as SWE? Where is your office? I'm in Bay area making same, would like to back to Florida P.s. Too risky (in case you have a spree of bad luck), especially with that TC.. I would wait till you have a job offer that you like.

Facebook doomnugget Feb 2, 2020

He's in the Bay. Disney has several offices here for D+, WDAS, etc.

Microsoft Bow Feb 2, 2020

WDAS? Walt Disney Animation studios? Isnt that in Burbank? Or do you mean Pixar in Emeryville?

Amazon jyXG34 Feb 2, 2020

Get an offer than get layoff as there would be bias by recruiter if they hear you were laid off they would not prioritize you as you have the need now v/s them.

Google Maxxis Feb 2, 2020

The goal is to reduce risk here... Get the offer then do whatever you want... That's keep you professional in the eyes of your colleagues... World is small ;)

Apple dijasas Feb 2, 2020

Wait until the last minute until you get a better offer. Nowadays the companies are so greedy especially FFANG. They don’t even honor your current compensation if you look desperate to them, let along you have nothing in hand. Especially with your TC it’s better to get several competitive offers to negotiate a better one although it’s easier said than done

Facebook doomnugget Feb 2, 2020

I agree with everyone else. Get offers lined up, and when the layoffs come, collect your check. Disney tends to do layoffs well, so it shouldn't be as bad.

Thanks everyone for advice and support. I will know more about severance next week before I volunteer. And now I have started looking for back up options as many suggested. Thanks

Please post an update once you know the severance details. Very curious to know.
