Hi there, thanks for your time in advance! As title suggests, I would really appreciate some advice on suggesting my next career move. A little background about me: I graduated 3 years ago with a B.S comp sci and B.A applied math, have about 3 YOE in Data Engineering. I currently work in a mid sized education tech company as Engineer III which pays surprisingly well, but the work is boring and data is small scale. from "mParticle" CDP SAAS, Series D startup valued at 122Mil, ~200 people Title: Software Engineer III, Data Engineering Job Description: Help build out a data infrastructure foundation that process huge event streams and also move into backend engineering which I really want to get into. Basically working directly with the VP of data science. TC: base:141,250 | 5k sign on bonus | 5000 stock options @ strike price 106$ from "Vimeo" video platform, owned by IAC, about to spin off into own company, ~1k people Title: Site Reliability Engineer, Data (lvl 2 or 3, to be decided) Job Description: One of the first SRE on the data org, which contains 4 data teams. Will be working on SRE related work with the lead Engineer. TC: verbal offer depending on my level (recruiter still communicating with hiring manager), base: 145-150k | 8-10% bonus | 20-30k equity over 4 years, EDIT on offer 2: The team felt I was really strong in Algo and SD, ended up offer me Engineer 3 vs SRE 2 TC: Base 150k | 10% bonus | 50k RSU/4year I'm leaning towards Vimeo because it's larger scale in terms of data, and working in the video space can lead to good career growth maybe into Youtube, Netflix, etc down the line. Also SRE is a pretty cool field to get into and is on the higher end of engineer salary band. mParticle is a smaller startup that can potentially IPO a few years down the line. I've never worked in a startup before, it's exciting and challenging(in a good way) for me. Lot's of hat to wear, but also more ambiguity. I haven't negotiated with either yet, still waiting on Vimeo offer. mParticle wants my answer by this Friday and so I'm here asking for some advise. I would really value your opinion if you can shed some light and help a fellow new engineer on this crossroad. Thanks for your time <3 #offers #career #advice #negotiation #help #evaluate #tech
Agree to both to give yourself more time to think it over before start date
Thank you for your comment, the mParticle offer deadline is Friday, I'll def keep on thinking this through!
5000 options is a joke, don’t count on it. Vimeo is a decent brand for your caterer and real Money today, until you find something better. Like others said SRE is not for everyone though.
Thanks for your comment! Yea, I had to google what startup TC are made of and people say options are like lottery tickets. Vimeo is definitely a better brand today and more safe in terms of TC. I'll dig more into SRE stuff and see if it's my cup of tea.
How were the sre interviews? Lots of LC?
Both are bad, keep interviewing
What level does 3 translate to? Were you able to negotiate?
Did you join? How is your experience at Vimeo?

They're completely different roles. Do you want to be an SRE or a SWE?
Thanks for your comment, I researched a bit into what SRE do. I think it's a great opportunity to give it a try. SRE,Data is a relatively new title, they're kind of like SWE building data infra using DevOps principles. Worst case, I think it'll be quite easy to switch to SWE roles within the data org.
