I've grown up in SLC and have always loved it, but man does the pay lag here compared to other states. People tout the cost of living being lower here, but honesty, housing prices have gone up so much in the last five years that cost of living is getting close to a lot of more expensive areas. What are you earning and paying for housing? I'm two years out of school, earning $40k, paying $800/month for an apartment and am buying a house this month at $335k, which will be about $1500/month with mortgage and taxes. Wife earns about $45k. Am I crazy to think wages suck here? I work in a known low-paying industry, so am curious what you guys think in your respective industries.
Make over $75k with one year experience in software. House mortgage is $1500/month, 6 bdrm 4 bath, 4500 sqft. Wife pulls in another $25k. 3 kids
Thanks for the info. What city are you living in?
Lehi
Total compensation is around 200k, wife doesn't work. Home cost $345k. Pretty happy with my living situation.
That's amazing. What city are you in?
What's the position? How much of that is stock vs salary?
$70k plus benefits/bonuses, right out of college in software. $940/month rent for 650 sqft in Provo.
RAKING IT IN
I make $78k and pay $1200 in Orem. I’m also in marketing.
How many years experience? Brb applying to workfront
Several years freelancing, 1 year as a marketing-related consultant at another company, and 1 year at Workfront. Workfront pays well if you’re willing to work hard and know how to negotiate!
110k, Lehi, $1200/month mortgage, software engineering. You don't have to be exceptionally smart to be in software. Just dedicated. Read enough posts here and you'll know the typical developer isn't exceptionally smart. They just think they are. It only takes a rudamentry understanding of statistics to know most developers are average and since most people are average most people could do software if they dedicated themselves and don't mind sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day.
“to know most developers are average and since most people are average most people could do software” The fuck? You could insert any profession, and your sentence objective wouldn’t change.
Are you saying any average person couldn't do any average job? Sure there are some jobs that average people couldn't do but most programming jobs aren't on that list.
I’m making 85K. I own a 265k home laying about 1600 mortgage. Roughly 4 years experience
Isn’t 40k average for the US? And you’re in marketing right?
I am in marketing/PR and make on the low end of the national average ($50k). My wife, who's an RN, makes about half of what nurses in surrounding states make.
PR guy and former Utah resident here. I was making about what you make two years in. Was able to bump it to $55k by year three, and $65k by year four. Then I moved to NYC and went into an agency for $110k. While NYC has a high cost of living, I still save way more money than I did in Utah while enjoying a higher standard of living. The trade off is that Utah has a really relaxed work culture, which is not the case here. For reference, my rent in Utah was $1200. It’s $2700 here, but I was able to drastically reduce certain expenses (like transportation).
