I currently live in Singapore and have been here for 8-9 years, have a PR, but not interested in citizenship (its both hard and l already got rejected once, so no plans to apply again). My son is in 5th grade now. I want to move back to India, but the challenge is that my son doesnt know any local languages, I am not sure how he can get school - international schools, i heard its very hard (because they dont accept kids easily, they have to be in elementary or after 9th, the openings are limited) . I am open to Mumbai or Bangalore (since my wifes parents are in Bangalore and my parents are in Mumbai) - I will find some job there, but my worry is kids education, how can I get a decent education without the local language being forced onto a kid who has never learnt a local language or for that matter Hindi all through life. India is making it hard to RTI for kids who speak english all through life and no second language.
Kids adapt to the environment much more quickly than you think. I don’t know about India. The challenge of returning to China is more about unnecessary competition with local kids and ultimately having to send them to the US, repeating our life. I would listen to the thoughts of your child and see what they values and prefers.
Make sure the kid focuses on english, math and science. Let the child flunk local language exams. He doesn't need it anyway.
Might be a good idea to enroll your child in Hindi classes starting now (online or in Singapore) for a headstart before moving to India. Kids pick up fast. With that, cbse schools will be a good target in any location. You can always continue in India with Hindi tuitions.
No one needs to learn Hindi
I recommended Hindi as all cbse schools irrespective of location will have that as a core subject. ICSE/Local boards may have the local language as a core subject in addition to Hindi. So better for OPs kid to start with the one common indian language between the different boards.
Hey. I was in the same boat some time back. My kids did not know Hindi and I was worried about schools. Looking back now 1. kids really adapt quickly and will learn. 2. There are pretty good schools of international schools. The kids to teacher ratio in good schools is 20 is to 1 teacher. Meeting international standards. International schools do make exceptions for kids coming from foreign countries. I would be more concerned about kids adjusting to Population, pollution, traffic, play areas etc
Start talking in the local language at home, make a rule no English at home. You will see a difference in a month.
+100
What are you saying? I have lived on and off in either Bangalore or mumbai in last 10 years and kids there knows english better than their mother tongue. Sometimes they don’t even speak mother tongue at all.
Kid will learn don’t worry. Also go to Mumbai, way better than Bangalore for raising your kid tbh.
Want to add more data points - I dont think there are international schools accepting 5th graders, its either elementary or after 9th. Do you know of any international schools accepting 5th?
Most international schools will accept, kids at any grade.. now because it is close to start of year, they maybe full. But you can still get admission if you try a few schools.
What were you smoking all these years , that kid doesn't know local language? What were you speaking at home? Were ashamed or was losing prestige , speaking in mother tongue to children?Wannabe foreigner?
Data point here, speak mother tongue at home kids speak back in English…🙃
Adults learn new foreign languages just for fun. It’s much easier for kids. Kids within India learn new languages even when they move across state boundaries. Problem seems to be you, not your kid!
Agree. Again, why not teach your child their mother tongue at least?
Yes, OP is the culprit here
