It seems like there a lot of tech roles with Vice president titles in big finance companies. But looking at LinkedIn, it seems like these people are maybe more like senior-staff engineers? What’s the deal with these Director and VP titles at big finance?
VP titles in finance are like L5/L6s here.
Vp = 5 yoe with a crappy masters
But why are the titles VP and director? Surely they are not actually VPs and Directors. Or are they? Obviously the title says they are. Or maybe these titles just mean completely different things to finance
I mean it’s fairly obvious they mean completely different things. They’re just corporate titles. There are thousands of VPs and Directors who are technical individual contributors.
Try google "why is everyone at banks a VP". In banking VP doesn't mean much. It's a junior position.
VP is not a junior position at a bank. Most managers are VPs
In big tech positions are usually divided into Junior (up to L5) and Senior (L6 or even L7+). A line manager at L5 is pretty junior. See also https://www.levels.fyi/?compare=Google,Goldman%20Sachs&track=Software%20Engineer which shows VP map to L4!
You could have searched “VP bank” to get your answer
I actually searched “VP finance” and “vice president finance” as this title schema isn’t specific to banks. I’ve seen some hedge fund and other trading companies adopt it as well. Not many results for that. I see now, thanks to this thread, that it is more common among banks. Thanks for answering my question though.
It is all over the place and different between companies. Hell, even in the same bank in the Front Office you will have in the ascending order: associates, VPs, directors, managing directors, executive managing directors and in the middle office it is associate, manager, senior manager, director, VP, SVP, EVP or something like this. It can be different between regions too. Don’t obsess with VP title, it is just a name for a seniority level.
Acoording to levels two sigma and hudson levels are L1, L2 etc. As for JP Morgan here is the chart
HRT doesn't have levels/titles
Oh ok. Thanks for the clarification. I was going off of this.
