Thinking about moving to Canada due to long GC wait and terrible life on H1B. Not sure which area shall I move to. Toronto for better job opportunities or Vancouver for live-able weather. Currently in bay area & in tech. What else shall I consider before moving ? TC - laid off
For folks voting for Vancouver, does that area really have good tech jobs or the assumption is - I am going to work in seattle and take train - twice a week 🧐
Less crimes
Does amazon have big office in Vancouver?
Age? Both can’t go wrong but if younger, Toronto for the nightlife/social life
30+, married. Not into night life.. like to go out though
Then vancouver is probably better fit. Are you into nature stuff? Summer in Vancouver is just like Seattle - top notch. Gloomy winter but much warmer than Toronto
Are you ready for a huge TC hit ? The cost of living is not less in either of these places from what I’ve heard
Lower TC + Visa freedom > High Tc + Visa struggle
Canada is going to shits because the fucking government is stupid with lack luster innovation. A fellow Canadian in Toronto who is trying to move down south
I chose Toronto because of availability of choices. Vancouver is just…Vancouver. And maybe if you stretch a bit you’ll reach Calgary. Toronto and the east coast has a lot to offer. While housing prices in both places are absolute shit, Toronto is a little better because…availability of choices. Lot of greater Toronto area (GTA) has been developed and is expanding. It way more diverse than Vancouver. Vancouver is mini Hong Kong and China and there’s no hiding the fact that every second person is either of them. If you’re okay with that, you can live there. Toronto winters are way overrated by people who have never seen snow in their entire life. It’s not that bad at all. Toronto actually gets very little snow due to the lake effect. Toronto also has a wide variety of job opportunities…much higher than Vancouver. I’d say about Toronto has 3x more tech jobs than Van.
Lol as someone who grew up in Toronto and Vancouver, this is so incorrect in many different levels other than the job opportunities that OP already knows.
So people live in GTA and commute to Downtown/offices? How is that commute? Is public transport available and good?
Toronto or Calgary for sure. Vancouver has highest rent in the country and food isn't that much better, or sometimes worse than the cities I mentioned. Only good for the views and beaches in the summer.
Is the rent thing true even in suburbs? I don’t plan to rent/buy in either main city. Would like to go a little outside but if the commute is terrible from suburbs then that may change
Rent is the same across all the suburbs. There isn't enough housing and not enough jobs for all the people moving here. If the rent is listed cheaper than market, 100 potential tenants show up to the viewing.
Canadian salaries are nowhere close to what Americans make. A lot of Canadian in tech actually move to US instead.
Mostly senior Faang engineers make north of 400k else everyone in USA earns less, may be around 300-350k if yoe is 10+ Outside of bayarea, the comp drops even lower.. And if you are not in Faang, the bay area is costly as it has high rents high everything. How much swe makes in canada? On avg?
Less than 100k USD.
Montreal is also an option, rent is cheaper and there are tech jobs there too.
Nicee, what tech companies? Do you live there? How is the weather?
Nah I'm from Toronto. I have friends who live there though. Ubisoft is big there, Google and Microsoft have offices, there are some startups too. It is a smaller selection but it is a more affordable place with good QOL.
Vancouver is a good option, big head count for MSFT and amazon, Vancouver is cheaper than Toronto. I have tried both already .
Cheaper how?
Go back to India
As a Canadian who is watching everyone who stayed in Canadas quality of life deteriorate monthly, this is the correct answer.
That's the thing. Who is responsible for the deteriorating quality of life. It's the Canadian business owners - they continue to underpay and pay pre COVID salaries despite all the inflation. With the liberals in their pockets and doing their bidding, the only hope is to vote for the conservatives who may be pressured to reduce immigration. Despite StatsCanada publishing a report producing evidence that there's no labour shortage of highly skilled/educated labour, the immigration laughs in their face and does the exact opposite of what is required, he invites MORE educated/skilled labour while all public infra and housing is under severe supply constraints with no sight of those things easing. Every industry in Canada is so supply constrained - industry associations, professional bodies do it themselves with out any additional help from the govt (doctors, hospital administrators working with contracting agencies while not employing nurses full time) . Free markets my ass.
