I recently moved to Service Provider from Vendor and i am surprised with work culture. Service provider is more bureaucratic. Its take lot of hoops to get through to get actual work done. Its always about just talks about process improvement,SLA,KPIs but actual technical work is minimal. Problem is not the talks ,even after so many calls ,things just doesnt move forward. I spent almost 50-60% time in meetings in which i should not be even part of...but the whole team is invited to those so that if anyone wants to speak. Vendor side i agree that you are restricted to one vendor product line but with so many of customers,its different challenges every day. With SP even thought multi vendor products in network,there are people with specific vendor skill set mostly handles those challenges individually and nothing else. My colleagues from vendor side were very surprised that i am leaving vendor to join SP. I didnt realize the gravity of that as its first switch that i was doing in so many years for pay raise. Is this the common experience of people out there who worked on both sides? Working for service provider is like an architect role. You don't end up being super hands on but you also have a bigger picture and have the vision for the product/service. I don't know if service provider is more lucrative but its a much safer and easier job than working for a vendor where your fortune depends on the service providers buying your stuff. But like you mentioned you are not very hands on and you can get bored really easy.

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Operators don't build things, they manage those who do build things. You're at a different level in the pyramid now and feel disoriented because the rules of your previous station don't work any more. So, how does one manage a vendor? Probably you didn't learn much about that doing tech work for a vendor, because you were primarily concerned about technical work and you were being managed by someone else. Now you need to become your ex-boss's boss. It's a new skillset and may take you a while to get used to. Not everyone is suited for it either
