I have an offer for Staff machine learning engineer from Venmo and the TC is same for both Austin and Chicago. I’m more inclined towards Austin because of the booming tech market there but for a similar package Chicago seems to be the cheaper alternative. The role is fully remote for the next 1year and I’d be working from California .. so I’d be paying more taxes . In that event what do you guys think is the better option ? TC : 210k YOE: 4 Also, how’s the work culture at Venmo and perks offered ?
Chicago and Austin have as different weathers as can be expected so pick your poison. Austin is more expensive but has no income tax so it should even out. Chicago is a lot more fun in general (imo) if you’re young. Austin is going to be a lot better for career prospects just because the tech scene is way more diversified.
Yeah.. I’m young and single and the only reason I’m worried about Chicago is the weather.. I’m very lazy and would end up cozying in the bed all day
Then go Austin. Even in the hot weather you can be in a pool
So many questions: 1. Staff Eng at 4 yoe? 2. TC for staff only 210k? 3. You can move to Austin to save taxes but prefer staying in California?
Yeah.. I prefer staying in California. Though the engineering level is on the higher side.. T25 at PayPal.. they only pay around 200k range.. checked levels.fyi as well for my yoe
There are enough indoors things to do in Chicago, and most of the year weather is ok.
^that. Austin is growing (and getting expensive), but Chicago is an alpha city.
Austin. I live in Chicago and it sucks living here. I visit my tech friends in Austin frequently and it’s nicer.
Austin in long run for tech opportunities.
Chicago — incredibly fun city, always stuff to do, incredible food, suburbs have great public education if you’re thinking of settling down and even a couple of CPS schools are good too, public transport is underrated. Was just in Austin this weekend and driving on the highways suck and you rly do need to drive everywhere.
You don't have to drive much if you live and work near downtown. Apple's campus is in the boonies, though. I don't think I could commute to that.
Yeah totally fair, wasn’t sure where in Austin the Venmo office was. Also if OP likes traveling often, O’Hare >>>> Austin Bergstrom airport
Heard commute from Austin airport sucks ? Is that true?
Going downtown it sucks, mostly because everything is dug up for road extension (so it should get better eventually). Going to 130 towards Muskrat's Gigafactory general direction is perfectly fine in my experience.
I live in east downtown, takes 10-15 minutes to get to the airport
If you can buy in austin right away and start building equity in a hot market, do it. Otherwise, Chicago! The pace of growth is more reasonable and you won’t get priced out of the market as quickly. (I have been in austin over 10 years, just bought this year, already big equity gains since date of purchase)
Chicago is where you go to get shot. Austin is where you go to deal with homeless and traffic. Take your pick.
You can get shot or stabbed by 6th and Trinity any given weekend. It isn't something exclusive to Chicago.
you’re an idiot lol. also probably super fun at parties

Who are these retards asking for dictatorship in India?
TC at 210 looks at the lower end. At 4 yoe you may be able to get an offer of 250 to 350 range from other companies.
Not in Austin. 210 is pretty high for 4yoe in Austin.
I work in EE in Austin and make the same with 1.3 YOE. He can definitely get more.
