I moved to the US 10+ years ago to study for MS in CS and then have been working on visa with approved i140 while I'm stuck in the indefinite backlog for employment category green card backlog. My classmate from undergrad recently move to the US on L1A and got EB1C Green Card last year. I'm genuinely happy for my classmate. But I'm feeling low and defeated because I moved to the US to live here forever in peace. I willingly left behind everything I had to live a life I really want to live. My deam feels impossible. Another long distance family member illegally crossed Mexico US border not too long ago. Became undocumented. Recently got Green Card. I hear rumors from extended family that this guy now owns a house and runs commercial trucks. The ideology of following the law and valuing education & merit feels like slap in the face.

Life is unfair.
There is no way to get green card if illegally here. They lying
Lol yes there is. Plenty of amnesty and safe haven programs in California. Even had an Indian taxi driver bragging to me that he had a green card. You can definitely do it.
California has nothing to do with green cards. A green card is a federal document. I hope you also get financial advice from your taxi driver.
People in the legal queue are mostly H1B workers who on avg earn a higher income. Yes, some may say 80-90K is peanuts but compare it with the avg salary across the country. Avg salary amongst non consulting/service roles is much higher. The problem with high income group is they are small in number where ever you go. Because of that they donât form a significant voting majority in elections. Except in California and Washington they cannot form that voting block and lobby for immigration reforms even if they somehow want to do it. You have to either be ultra rich and fund political parties or be that strong majority voting block so that you can lobby for whatever you want. H1B workers are somewhere in the bottom of that chain. On top of that I donât see a strong indian lobby for it. Indians still have the colonial burden. Most of us even at work mostly have the âyes sirâ attitude. We in a way are self centered bigots. Once we clear the immigration hurdle by getting a GC, we hardly care for the remaining people. In fact we magically become anti immigration. So good luck trying the legal way. What are the political parties gaining by giving somewhere around 300K GCs to Indians across US. If you think from their perspective they really donât have any political gain. 300K or even a million is a very tiny number to impact elections. As long as we stay the voting minority there is no way anything serious will come out of it. Also giving GCs to all doesnât give them immediate benefit. They have to wait for a good 5 yrs to see the impact at the elections. No politician would wait for so long to see any impact.
You forgot to mention that itâs all about what corporates/ lobbyists want. Itâs against corporatesâ interest to give GC to h1b holders.
What about the Telugu epidemic. Lot of uneducated TELGUS getting the IT jobs. Lot of fraud prevalent in TELUGU community. Also Americans think whole india is like these TELUGUS just because there are most 90% of TELUGUs here in USA .
Totally with you on this emotion. EB1c is a total manipulation. However, i did not get how ur undocumented relative got gc. That too in short period of time. Pls more details here.
Only way to get GC after crossing illegally is by marrying a US citizen You can do that anytime
"I willingly left behind everything I had to live a life I really want to live". You make it sound like you gave up so much to do this, and you got nothing out of this. But that's not true, you are getting paid a buttload of money that you otherwise couldn't. If you valued the stuff you gave up more than money, you can go back to that.
I value permanently living in the US over the money. I willingly left behind everything I was born with because it wasn't fulfilling and I was not happy. What you may value is buttload of money but that's not what I imagined for moving to the US. You're also incorrect and presuming I'm getting paid or saved buttload of money. However, I'm enjoying the not so little things that I can only get here: better quality of life even when I'm nobody.
No, You are NOT genuinely happy for your classmate and that is completely fine.
Itâs crazy mate. Iâve seen the same. My friends who moved from India were in a higher role than me because they didnât get their masters. Donât worry itâll work out in the long term
