I am hiring an external candidate. At the last moment the candidate claims to have a competing offer from Amazon and asking to match it. Are there tools available for hiring managers to verify if the candidate actually got the offer. I don’t want to use my budget to match a fake offer. Recruiter is new to MS and does not have a clue. Update: Candidate is not ready to provide the offer letter
You know how he performs in the interview. Why would what Amazon thinks of him or gives him change your offer so drastically ?
It would be inappropriate of him to make them generate an offer letter just so he can use it to negotiate, and violate his NDA in the process. If Microsoft were on the other side you’d be extremely unhappy.
Do you sign a NDA before getting the offer?
If there are trust issues from starting then I think you should avoid hiring him.
Ask the candidate to take a screen shot of the offer or email
As a HM you should be able to make call here. You should ask him to provide that offer so you can negotiate with your manager for the same. If he still not agree, consider if you really need to hire or can still look for a more trustworthy candidate. He probably will take your offer and again go to amazon (if he is true) and again match and then again will play this game. So think all scenarios and make decision. After all, you are the HM not him
dont give offer - rescind. I had someone who faked the same, i held on and after a week, he came back and took my offer.
For heavens sake - Microsoft NEVER provides an offer letter unless you give them a verbal acceptance (talking from experience). Why do you expect Amazon to do it? Having your cake and eating it, eh?
Yeah, they are EXTREMELY hypocritical.
I would also like to know if these tools exist? What’s to stop someone from faking a competing offer? Seems like the strongest point of leverage a candidate has to increase their salary. Sure it might be morally reprehensible, but are there any practical/legal reasons a candidate couldn’t do this?
Reading this thread is turning me off of the idea of interviewing with Microsoft. I find this discussion rather distasteful. The candidate made a mistake by mentioning Amazon. The candidate should have countered with something specific, and Microsoft should respond with a final offer. It’s that simple, and that ethical.
If reading a thread is what drive your decisions - sure, I too would suggest stick where you are. And I am surprised how are you sustaining in the job given you making your opinions by reading what other post!
Why don’t ask candidate to get that offer detail? If he has the offer he must have some detail with him.
