Hi Folks, Can you please evaluate an offer and answer a few questions? Visa: (Senior Staff role) Base: 210k Bonus: 12% RSU: 350k (3yr period; vest 1/3 each year) TC: 352k Sign-on: $30k 401k employer contribution: $21k max (200% match upto 5% base pay). This is an extra 9-11k in TC compared to most companies with similar base, where I am seeing $10k cap or 6% of base(1:1 match) as max. Pros: Good bonus payout (usually 150% of targeted), solid 401k, stable stock, work wise - will be involved in setting up a new team (and processes) as a senior most engineer, high visibility, lots of learning, title inflation looks good on resume, flexibility to wfh (manager’s on east coast), manager(Sr. Dir.) & senior mgmt. seems nice. Cons: WLB will take a hit on most days, expected to perform at a principal engineer level. Questions: 1. I am yet to receive offer numbers from Walmart Global Tech (Staff role). Do you think they will be able to offer higher than Visa? Deadline from Visa is approaching and Walmart is very slow in giving initial offer numbers (their recruiters are a nightmare). 2. Is it okay to join Visa on receipt notice? Who handles immigration stuff for them and how are they? I need to join before July 1 to be eligible for a bunch of things. 3. Visa Recruiter told me that top 50% performers overall are eligible to get refreshers each year, which range from 10-15% of base. It vests over 3 years. Can someone confirm on this? 4. Any other piece of advise is most welcome. YOE: 9+ Location: Bay Area Current TC: 180k (Sr. Software Engineer) #tech #visa #walmart
On #3, yes, more than 50% are eligible for RSUs and the RSU % is also higher.
Thanks for confirming. Appreciate it! Can you share the immigration company name and how helpful are they ?
It’s BAL and they’re as awful as they are with other big tech firms. But no option as we’re pretty much stuck with them
I feel like you could get a way better sign on.
Your level seems higher with the Visa offer than walmart. Walmart would be more competitive if you were getting a principal SWE offer from them. Your annual bonus with walmart will usually be 20% or greater and I think you will get 80K stock each year. There are generous annual bonus and refresher stock standards for all the levels and almost everyone gets the money if you are performing decent. For the past 4 years the company has paid more than the standard bonus for almost everyone in global tech due to high company profits. After looking at your visa offer, I’m only concerned about walmart beating the initial stock grant. Also, walmart has a pretty decent remote work policy (100% virtual) and WLB should be solid.
Overall this is definitely a good offer for Visa. However Visa is ramping up its offers to external candidates. So it’s hard to say if this is the best offer you can get for this level (in terms of RSUs). Are you sure that this is for Senior Staff instead of Staff or the relatively new Staff 2/Senior Consultant? The base salary seems like an element in favor of Senior Staff because the base SF area mid point for Senior Staff is 188k at present. So you are definitely clear of that. However a 12% target bonus is low for Senior Staff. The minimum is 15%. In addition, the advice that the top 50% performers get refreshers is generally true … below senior staff (and the range is 10-20% not 10-15%). The policy changed before the previous comp cycle to give essentially all senior staff refreshers and to differentiate on the amount (10-30% of base) vesting over 3 years. So yes definitely a good offer for Visa, but double check on the level.
Min 15% Is director level. 12% is accurate for Sr staff
After reflecting on the personal and circumstantial evidence I’ve experienced, I suppose that this could be true. Fyi13, do you know the full range of possible target bonuses for Director and Senior Staff? I’ve been thinking that they were both 15-20%.
2. Ideally it should be okay , BAL global used to handle immigration 2 years ago and my experience was great with them. However, if filed in premium from start to end it only takes a month including LCA
4.Having worked for both of these companies. VISA has better processes and flow of information is consistent on projects and also on other employee related general issues where as Walmart is more chaotic. Also Visa is more laid back compared to Walmart (WLB)
This is a great offer
Visa offer looks awesome
