Hey blinders, I just got a job as SWE I at Amazon and was wondering what I should expect in terms of WLB. Coming from the defense sector the WLB was amazing however TC was peanuts. TC:$150k YOE: 2
150K YOE 2 in amazon? That’s low…
not in lcol
Highly depends on the team. On average, aws will be a bit worse than cdo.
Why would anyone want to work on AWS?
Potential tech growth, I guess. SDEs could get in depth hands-on distributed system experience in many aws teams.
Stay away from Amazon. Just search Amazon In blind, you will know why.
You need to expand your horizon being blind
I have seen this unprovoked hatred for amazon from linkedin folks that i can roughly generalize. I wonder why.
Stay away!
What about BIE? How’s the pay and wlb?
What's BIE ?
Amazon sees SWE-1 as chicks in a farm. One of them gets crushed (piped), no one cares. Expect 40-60 hrs per week
SDE1 here. I work ~35 hrs a week. So do most of my colleagues.
Well in my team everyone worked 90 hrs minimum (including weekends)
First every group is different but my experience is Amazon doesn’t believe in WLB. My first week I had 60 projects. When asking leadership how I measure success on one high profile project I was told only thing that mattered was meeting deadline even if shoddy work or product being rolled out. Look elsewhere is my advice if you want balance.
Wait…are you talking about your onboarding tasks?? 😂 SDE1 has an embark plan to complete and this takes as least a month lol. You aren’t assigned sprint tasks until embark is completed.
nana4u you are not correct here
I don’t work there but know a lot of people that do. You will work you ass off. 60+ hours a week. Work most Saturdays. High chance you will be piped in the first year because their idiotic stack ranking system that most other companies abandoned years ago. It’s dog eat dog. If you make it more than three years you’ve got a real accomplishment to put on your resume to leverage at a better company
Didn’t know surviving at amazon for 3 years is an accomplishment lol one more year for me to hit that target lol
^ disregard everything said, highly depends on team and org. Ask an insider to check the managers tech survey and how his team thinks he is doing. Ask manager the OPS and tech stack etc during team matching interview
Honestly, Amazon is invisible to me now in my job search. Their reputation is really, really bad and I perceive it as a gamble, per your comment. Unless there are some fundamental changes, not even high TC will keep drawing experienced talent.
Oh wow that’s sad to hear. Amazon surely misses your great talent
Highly team dependent
Depends on the team. Internal transfers are available after one year
I have heard some people move within 2-3 months.
Internal transfer is available from day 1 in US
