A lot of people seem to think that WLB is everything, but I find that to be incredibly odd. I have a mentor who is a successful CEO of this own company, and when he was 18 he was able to do one of those freshman internships for Microsoft. He and a team of 4 other interns were given a project to own and deliver. They loved every minute of it, they worked around the clock (beyond 3 am!!) and were super passionate. They didn't work these crazy hours because of the company, in fact their manager and supervisor told them to go home and relax!! But they were passionate. Not only did they learn a ton, but they create friendships and an experience that they will remember forever. Do you think it would be the same effect if they worked 9-5 and went home to watch TV? I am sad I never had an internship experience like that where I was completely engulfed in my work and learned so much and created a fond memory. I am a very ambitious person and prioritized wlb over passion because that is what everyone talks about. Now at Google everything moves so slowly I feel like I am wasting time. I want to grow at my craft and become strong enough so that I am confident in my abilities. I want to dive into my work for a few months or a year because I know in the long run that will benefit me. I am young and have energy to work hard and play hard. tl;dr do not prioritize wlb over passion.
There is still enough time to delete this...
I think the main complain over bad WLB is based on you are FORCED to work overtime. After all no one complains about things they choose and enjoy (and can stop doing whenever they want to
Also come to amazon if you think google is too slow
Dude everyone have priorities, well u r young, don't have family probably but once you start a family your family will take over the priority and your passion will be how to make your family happy n in that process you will grow, you will work more hard but again you will learn to keep the balance,
Yes ofc, like I said when you have a family priorities change. But when you are young (for example 18 year old freshman in college) it may not be a bad idea to work hard to set yourself up for success, as long as you are capable
I agree I used to work my ass off when I passed out of college because I wanted to learn more, try to get into good company. Well this is your age to learn, take risks and be more successful
Lol. If I told you you were going to die 18 months from now would it change your perspective? It is great to have passion. But, tech, really? At any rate, no one is stopping you from setting up a cot in your cube. And if Google is too slow for you, there is a ton of startups who would love your enthusiasm
staying up until 3am on your own accord and being forced into staying until 3am by your manager when your marriage is going to hell are two different situations. when people talk about WLB they usually don’t refer to possibility of staying late because they love what they do. This option is usually available. Bad WLB is often an indicator of the management not planning effectively their resources capacity or putting their own career agendas before their team well being. That said loving what you do but being forced into doing it too much still isn’t good.
I would love to work at a company that moves slow. There's more to life than work.
See your when you’re burnt out by 30
I think health is more important than passion, what is point of working till 3 am and loosing health. What will you do with all the money, if you cannot enjoy it.
I was a crazy hard working careerist when I was in my twenties and thirties. As a result I am FI now. But holy shit am I a burned out wreck.
How does your burn out manifest?
I’m a case study in severe burnout. Just google for it, I am that guy.
good for you. For the rest of us, our jobs arent our passion. Theyre simply what pays the bills. As such, we dont want to work until 3am
That’s great. It doesn’t have to be your passion if you are 30 with kids. But if you are 18-24 it’s a great time to invest in your future. Like I said work hard play hard. Work your tail off, learn all you can, and set yourself up for success. All while you can still go out and party, travel, and live life because you typically reap the fruits of your labor. You think after that summer internship my mentor just went back to the grind? No he enjoyed himself for the job well done and continued to strive for greatness.
snarky reply: thanks Tony Robbins non-snarky reply: Judge for yourself whether working above and beyond is worth it in your situation. If you want to grind, more power to you
