Was it hard for you to get a SWE position in the Big N Companies?

I went to a top 50 school in the US and graduated with a CS degree last year. I had been unemployed for three months and submit over 400 applications. I felt lucky enough to get an offer from GM last year because I had 0 income and my family's financial circumstances are not good either(They are restaurant owner, and the pandemic hit the business hard) I was seeing the TC that people posting here, which really opened my eyes. I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to work in these companies, because I already felt difficult with some of my CS classes in college ( algorithm analysis and theory of computation, etc ) And it took my days to finish my CS assignment, and my friends could complete them very fast. I am just wondering, if I work hard on the leetcode, is it possible for me to work in the companies that has a good compensation? ( Not the big N companies, I don’t think I can even get the first round of interview) My current goal for 2021 is to jump to a company that has more 10k salary. Thank you!

I felt when I was a grad it was easy. I got 3 offers from around 10 company I applied (3 into onsite got offers from all) without doing much leetcode. However after 3 years I’ve been trying to apply for jobs. The success rate is slim :( not sure if it is related to the pandemic or something. A lot of companies requires very specific stack. Among those match with your stack, the competition is quite fierce. And those companies do generic hiring (F and G), has low fault tolerant rate. Meaning if you have a brain fart in the interview/come across a bad interviewer, it fucks up all your efforts.

Nobody knows with certainty if you can get into Big-N. But if you work hard you can definitely do a little better than GM. Iterate on that a few times and it will take you far. FB was my 5th job after college. My first job I made $42k.

Similar to above poster, Amazon is my 4th job out of college. At my first job I made 59k. You’d be surprised how quickly your situation can change.

First job was 68k. Joined faang after 1.5 years. I feel like interviews are harder now though

it wasnt hard for me but it was harder for me than the majority of my peers in college who had a proper game plan out of college. Personally I lucked out and landed at Apple and soon after I landed at Amazon (mistake, was not worth it). I have friends who did 50 LC, submitted a dozen applications, and still got a handful of good offers.
