Master with 2 yoe, robotics and swe. Currently eastcoast mid-size city. TC 180k (base + bonus, not counting options) Verbal offer from Waymo indicates a base in range of 130k - 140k. This is about 20k lower than my current base and considering the cost of living increases, felt like quite a tough offer to take. Waymo explicitly says they don't "match", how do I go about negotiating this? Would people willing to take such a big pay cut to join Waymo?
I am assuming that you are living in Michigan where the cost of living is low wrt to Bay Area n with your TC, one would be very comfortable. So if you want brand name then switching job will make sense to me else 👎
Thanks. Gonna wait for the official offer and see how it looks like.
Do not take a pay cut to come here. 140k u will be living poverty especially u have to use after tax salary to pay for your vested rsu tax (unless u want to sell those RSU at the current fmv) Apartment here is 4K a month for two bedroom (six ten east in Sunnyvale for example)
Are you at Pitt branch? And yes people do due to their brand name.
@MYKh63, could you please DM me, I don't have more chats available?
Did you end up taking this OP?
Got a good negotiation deal, leaning toward taking it.
Would you mind telling us what the deal is? Just to compare how the job market is..
Who cares about base, it’s about the total. Waymo stock is fairly liquid as there’s liquidation events where you can sell your shares back to Alphabet. But also yes, you would need a competing offer for them to increase
Isn’t it Waymo stocks that are just paper value for now?
I agree it's TC that matters. Although my current company does pretty well wrt benefits and stuff, I feel that it's the base that's going to make the tangible difference.
