A friend works at Facebook and is unsatisfied with the work environment. She has a small kid + 60 hours work week so can't find time after work to prep. She wants to take about 6 weeks of sabbatical/unpaid time off to prep. Anyone did this before? Any hacks to get such a time off approved by manager/hr ? (not great relationship with manager)

If your health is affected, go to a doctor and get them to write a note so you can take short-term disability.

You just have to prove you are burnt out and you can only do that if you have a long term relationship with your PcP or therapist and they can attest that you have indeed deteriorated to the point of burn out.

  • No one is making her work 60 hrs. She can cut back to less hours (probably get a lower rating next PSC but irrelevant if she’s quitting) and prep then. There’s no unpaid leave option

I do know everything regarding this topic, actually. and I am calm, you may be upset yourself because I corrected you but it wasn’t personal just objective and it wasn’t me being upset, but you. You can’t tell me how to feel or how I feel. Basic skill we learn when we are 3. Feelings are not facts. You cannot tell her/him how they feel. Ok?

Your first comment referred to paid privately insured short term disability leave and not FMLA. So correcting you again so you don’t spread misinformation. You SINCE then have confirmed, like I predicted, that FB, like Oracle, and like any other company worth their salt offer 1) privately insured short term partially paid disability for 3 months -which is DIFFERENT than FMLA. 2) unpaid FMLA and 3) unpaid sabbaticals which are also different from FMLA.

I repeat. I do know everything about this topic. What do you have to say?

    • You are a pretentious assh*le who is still incorrect on several points but I’m not going to argue with you because it’s pointless. Bye!

I shall start a business to advice young tech professionals so they can work the system. Would you hire me?

She can either go on privately funded short term disability like they suggest above -if she has a therapist or PCP who can file the paperwork and attest to her physical or mental deterioration- this is paid at 60-75% depending on your private insurance and 3 months is all you get before you have to file for long-term disability which is a lot more complicated and not privately funded. or also take a long-term unpaid leave FMLA to care for the kid or for her husband or mother or her self (family or medical leave of absence) or in some companies also a sabbatical (long term with no pay and no guarantee the job will be available but in theory it will). Doesn’t matter the manager doesn’t like her/him. You just submit it. If you have a valid reason like a doctor’s note for short term disability, or a good reason for FMLA or sabbatical you just go through the process these are YOUR rights and benefits and they are not dependent on your manager.

If she is working 60+ hours a week then maybe she shouldn’t have a kid or she shouldn’t work in tech. She is working hard, not smart and at 60+ hrs a week it is unwise to procreate.
