Seeing a lot of news recently indicating the PC industry of all things is somehow moving toward microtransactions and subscription based pricing where you essentially don't own your own hardware or operating system anymore. Even Intel has plans for CPUs where you have to pay extra to unlock CPU features on hardware you already own. Windows 11 problems: https://youtu.be/LcafzHL8iBQ - Prevents you from installing other operating systems - Encrypts your hard drive and keeps the key in your Microsoft account - Leverages hardware to prevent the user from making changes to the system - Tries to force you to sign into a Microsoft account to use your computer - etc... This trend is apparent with many other services and Microsoft appears to be prepping itself to adopt similar practices - You are forced to connect to the internet to use your PC - You are forced to store your data in the cloud (aka company owned servers) - You are forced into subscription based pricing. Even for services where you will loose access to your own files/data if you stop paying your subscription because they are in proprietary file formats. - Even if you think you buy something permanently (movies, games, etc.), it will still be deleted if that service is discontinued. Microsoft is starting to control your Windows PC the same way Apple controls iPhones. And, now that Apple is producing it's own Apple Silicon chips, they can start doing much worse with your Mac. Could we actually be seeing subscription based Windows/MacOS eventually??? Even Intel apparently has plans to release "Pay-As-You-Go" CPUs where you have to pay to unlock CPU features - https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-software-defined-cpu-support-coming-to-linux-518 - Related reddit post: https://reddit.com/spf166 Gonna see the exact same thing on your Apple Silicon Mac if this actually gains traction. I'm particularly irate with Microsoft because even just this week they locked me out of my account for an entire week: https://pastebin.com/raw/XCQet0RM . Am I not going to be able to log into my computer if something like this happens in the future? Anyone at #microsoft #apple or #intel #amd have any thoughts on this? How many other people are as concerned about this as I am? #tech #company #misc
Install Linux . Open source
So the Year of Linux is here now?
Still need a CPU to run it on "Pay $49.99 to unlock Linux support" - Intel
"Pay $49.99 to unlock Linux support" - Intel $49.99/mo FTFY đ
Paranoia
Microsoft using their PC dominance to crowd out others and force their product/services on others? I am shocked and appalled! - Guy who just woke up from a 29 year coma.
Build your hardware and install free and open source Linux
Literally just use Linux lmao Y'all are some real retards tbh
If I can buy a cheaper cpu and then buy feature unlock for things I did not initially need that's not a bad thing .. that would be best case scenario. The low end cpu price will still need to be competitive with eg amd but if Intel has a $100 software update to activate 2 more cores I'll buy that :-)
And that's why they try things like this, before you know it you'll have to pay a subscription to access your computer (just look at the state of video games)
Yep, people love subscriptions
Itâs inevitable as we reach a point where people no longer need to upgrade every year
Nah, us software people can find ways to make any hardware seem indequate đ
I agree but moores law predicts hardware will stop improving. At that point it will be up to the software and there will be no need to buy a new device for marginal performance gains. Maybe better architecture can improve that. Look at Apple. Even then you wonât have a new architecture every year.
1. Use linux, compile it yourself from sources, if you want 2. Always use fake names for all these âaccountsâ, I always have throwaway email under name of Donald T****p which I use freely with anyone asking for my info
Still need a CPU to run it on... "Pay $49.99/month to unlock Linux support" - Intel Also I've found Linux pretty ugly and confusing in my experience but at least open source software generally improves over time I guess.
Linux is open source, kernel can be programmed to trick CPU that it is running legit windows
