Folks, Likely all of us are pursuing professional careers but only some find a fulfilling career where joy and money goes hand in hand. For many it is just being caught in a golden cage: You don’t like it but at least it’s shiny :) - However, others have found their total fulfillment, make up the ladder really fast and enjoy the state they‘re in right now. Whatever that state does look like. So please share with us what has accelerated your personal career significantly? Was it a mentor, a career in sales, that you followed only your passion, a special event, that you brought ideas always to the attention of the upper leadership, that you retired from a corporate job and started your own business, etc. Maybe there was a time in life where you felt completely clueless and stuck. What has changed that? So please answer: 1) What exact ACTION / BEHAVIOR has expedited your career or unblocked (if you were stuck) your career path? 2) What is/was the OUTCOME of that action / behavior? Looking forward to see as many as great stories possible. #career #growth #tech #faang #Microsoft #Facebook #google #apple #netflix #amazon
One factor is finding an opportunity where your passion and skill match.
Love this post! Really looking forward to what people have to say since I’m fairly new 1.5 yoe and have had a shit time technical skills/learning wise at my current job and so leaving for a new one soon. Haven’t found that sweet spot in my career yet so really hoping this move is the one.
Same here
Biggest advice would be to just leave. For my case chevron doesn’t care about its san ramon office so they don’t even bother hearing about our salary complaints. I will be almost 2x my TC at my new job. The market is great. If you don’t have anything lined up now, start trying again from Jan 10th
1. Acknowledging that I was being screwed over in a position that I thought was good and applying for a job I thought I couldn't get. 2. Got the job, TC doubled.

Curious if Splunk has any kind of promotional opportunities with Mclaren being a sponsor of their F1 team. Do you guys ever get to participate in any special contests or anything?
Identifying my strengths and weaknesses. I chose to accept my weaknesses and worked on doubling down on strengths.
Nice. What’s the result / outcome
Got an opportunity that closely aligns with my strengths. Work doesn’t feel like “work” because I’m naturally good at it and I can then focus on stuff that matters to me outside of work. Outcome = more contentment/happiness.
Do you think you could have had as much success in product without the MBA?
Great work Amazon! Any advantage of doing an MBA other than switching career track?
Joining Amazon set mine back as a counter point to this topic
As a countercounterpoint, Amazon supercharged my career by forcing/giving me lots of useful experience and domain ownership in a short period of time.
Exactly, it's opposite, amazon helped my career. I was able to grow so much so fast that I could handle startups, then I could do rest of the things in life that I can want to do.
I realized no one had all the answers. For some reason this was a really empowering revelation and it gave me the confidence to break through my imposter syndrome.
This right here 🔥🔥🔥
This is a good one. Engineers often don't realize they can do more than just follow orders, and good leaders often look to reports to help with blindspots. Of course there is skill in justifying your proposals, but just realizing you can contribute to answers is empowering.
My last job. Interviewed for a junior SDE but got upleveled due to good interviews. Those 2 years were quite brutal but helped me immensely with things like working with a large codebase, manage manager’s expectations, deliver quickly, etc. That propelled me forward to this new job where I have had a great impact within 2 months of joining
Nice topic... Following...
Certainly odd phrasing though. “What helped you accelerate your career” Is not the same as “What helped you get to a position where you are happy” The title asks 1, but then in the description, OP seems to think it implies 2. Getting your career accelerated is not necessarily leading to a place where you are happy.
The title is fine, you want people to get it right away
