I only have learner's permit and never had a car before. I'd like to get a driver's license but have zero interest in driving. I want to move to a city where I not only don't need to drive, but also won't be judged for not having a car. I currently live in Canada and can move to anywhere in the US for my first FT role as a SWE at Square. Would like to move somewhere where I can settle down long-term as a SWE. What are the best cities for me? NYC seems like the best option and Boston also seems good.
Chicago has pretty solid public transportation and lower cost of living than NYC. Winters can be rough but if you're coming from Canada you can handle it.
COL is not an issue for me. My current role is flexible but I feel like settling in Chicago would limit opportunities in the future. If two cities are equally good, I'd also probably go with whichever has better weather and lower taxes.
Not really, you’ll be pretty limited with no car
I feel like everyone should live in NYC at some point in their lives. Best city hands down for dating. Amazing for making friends.
NYC is your best non-driving option and the most fun option.
TC? Also you might wanna consider some other cities with downtown like San Francisco. Although living there sucks. What's the remote situation? Do you get paid the same regardless of the location? Facebook drops your base depending on the CoL. So if that's not an issue you might also consider cities with downtown that has no state income tax. That would be mainly Seattle and Miami.
I haven't got TC details yet but I'm told it's 120/170 for NYC/SF/Seattle, no negotiating.
And yes, both base and RSUs vary significantly based on CoL AFAIK.
San Francisco
San Francisco is good but you need a car to enjoy the whole bay. People who live in the city don't leave the city though. It's like NYC in that respect. I lived in NYC and SF is incredibly smaller but still has enough variety to rarely leave. Great parks.
Paradoxically tons of people leave every weekend to go to the outdoors or tahoe, debatably the same thing. Or anywhere else in CA. And christmas is dead.
Maybe I should move back to NYC. Nah, SF is fucking amazing.
In NYC you will be judged if you have a car. Public transit in NYC is way better than SF. In CA you have to drive to visit places outside of the city (there are plenty of those). In the North East public transit coverage is better.
Boston is very walkable with good public transit. You could live here without a car and nobody would look down on it. DC probably has the best public transit system in the US. NYC has an extensive public transit system with taxis to supplement. People will think better of you if you don’t have a car here. San Francisco has the best public transit system and walkability on the west coast, but it’s an island. Chicago is the only place between the coasts with a relatively practical public transit system. Outside these (and even within some), you’ll be at a distinct disadvantage by not having a car. The Boston-DC corridor is the only area in the US with long distance train service that is practical for trips beyond these metro areas.
