What are the chances of Qualcomm or any other company becoming the next big semiconductor company and overtaking Intel in the next 10 years? If not Qualcomm who is Intel's biggest threat
They were already dethroned last year. And it was Samsung. This year they again became biggest semiconductor company.
Samsung sells everything from washing machine to what not, yes they have a good process technology as well, I am more talking in the sense of core competencies like x86 architecture, the server chips and laptop clients, the wireless era of 5G, yes so basically data centre, laptops, tablets, 5G edge and overall 5G
Semiconductor isn't just about CPU and networking. Memory is a huge part of semiconductor revenue. That is where Samsung revenue comes about. Just Google and you would find Samsung dethroned Intel as biggest semiconductor company in the world.
Like which Chinese company?
I thought TSMC is bigger than INTEL
In terms of, overall it's not even close, TSMC is a Fab basically.
Agreed OP
It depends on the segment that you're talking about.
Apple.
AMD?
Pure semiconductor companies, just making chips, won’t be there any more in next 10 years. There will be lot more software services sold on top of those chips that would make a difference in next 10 years . Like how Q licensing model is king . It has nothing to do with the actual chips qualcomm makes. And similarly Nvidia came out of no where in the last 5 years propelling semiconductor industry in a new direction. Application of 5G in areas like virtual reality, health, edge computing and automotive, will drive some innovation in the semiconductor companies.
I don't know why are you saying that Nvidia came out of nowhere 5 years ago. It's been in business for almost 30 years. Not sure you were born some 20 years ago when every kid on the block wanted an Nvidia Riva Tnt2 video card to play Quake 3.
Hehe .. making Graphics card is one thing and $20 stock price. And look at the diversification they did in the last few years whether it’s machine learning, automotive, etc. Intel and QUALCOMM are yet to diversify outside of their core business majorly. That is what coming out of no where. Else their stock price would not have gone 15 times. You need to grow up in thinking.
100%. Killed by its own toxic culture and incompetence.
What's toxic about Intel in your opinion
- Ultra politicized work environment, corruption is an Intel value - Extreme arrogance and contempt towards customer wants inherited from the old days - Antiquated and stale processes and overbearing bureaucracy - Focal has a completely fucked up system of rewards and incentives that prioritizes loyalty and toeing the line over achievements and results - For newcomers, shit pay that attracts shit tier talent. - To get high pay at Intel you absolutely must be a backstabbing, bloviating piece of shit, talent optional. This goes all the way to Intel fellow.
with Google and Apple going full vertical, I'm not sure there will be a big "Silicon chip only" type of company. I see the future being brightest for either a) cos that have several adjacents and revenue stream s (Chip, SW, services, licenses, maybe even some OEM grade hardware) b) niche/novel technologies that may become breakthroughs (for ex . Graphcore in UK etc.) Kinda went on a tangent there I guess..

By number of chips intel was never the king. It’s always been the embedded guys.
