I enjoyed doing Math olympiad quite a bit, and I generally enjoy Mathematical/LC style puzzles. However, I’m absolutely bored out of my brain doing SWE work, and Quant work. 1) I worked at Citadel for 3 years as a quant, but that was extremely boring, just running dumb linear regressions models all day. 2) I’ve tried SWE at Google. I’m bored out of my mind. I find the type of coding I do extremely pointless (moving data..) Can someone suggest a career that is math heavy? (And for ffs don’t say quant, this is a big farce)
😭 man you’re so gifted
Be a prof, I was in a similar boat but chose otherwise due to toxic academic politics. Industry has politics too but at least you get paid better.
To be honest I can prob get an Assistant prof role at a no name uni because I graduated from a top-5 PhD program, but the pay would be abysmal (say 100k or so) and I’m not sure if I’m willing to take that much of a pay cut to do fun stuff. I know I’m asking for much.
Yup, also from a top 5 PhD, unfortunately research is not the same as it used to be when I started my PhD.
Have you considered to become a research engineer ? I have a friend that is similar to you. He becomes a research scientist now.
How hard is it to get an interview for these places? If I have a PhD with decent pubs? I’ve heard getting interviews is pretty hard.
Yeah, don't bother with interviews. You're too good to get them. Better to keep posting on Blind, someone here will eventually just offer you a job of your dreams due to your prowess at humblebragging.
Statistics?
Actuary
Are you familiar with how hard it is to get into that? Is a CS Phd + prior quant experience enough or do I need to have some certain background in stats?
Quant is more hard-to-get than actuary. Actuary is just a specialized type of quant
Imagine having to do something useful as a job
Yes Two Sigma making rich people richer by running linear regression models on order book alphas is something really useful and honorable. I’m sure you’ll be very proud of it when you’re old.
I will be. Making markets more efficient is useful to anyone looking to buy or sell. Imagine if stocks were as inefficient as real estate, with 10% transaction fees. Selling people's data for advertising dollars isn't something that benefits any users.
Join a top research group inside Google ? Or MSFT or maybe Nvidia ? Lots of math stuff to do to optimize stuff ...
Google research team mainly does applied ML stuff now which I don’t find interesting. But good idea I should look up good theoretical research labs in the industry
None of the theoretical research labs in the industry would be interesting to you. They require work.
Applied Science @ Amazon is not SWE nor Quant
just keep the google job, coast and write math papers on the side. i was doing this for many years. you wont find serious math in any job outside academic research. even most applied AI research in the big firms is not very mathematical.
