First it was the head of HR, then the CTO then the CEO who left assuring people it was not Elliott doing the acquiring but one of their subsidiaries. How long do we have at the development level?

You have two options: A) stay, waiting uncertainly and stressfully for a possible layoff severance or B) GTFO now by job-searching. Working at an imploding company is stressful and a shitshow of misinformation and rumors. I’d choose B, personally.

Many people are let go in an acquisition. Usually the people who know the least are the first to be laid off. Those moving to the next company probably have interviews scheduled with them.
