For a long time I realized I misused my time in 1-on-1s. I would always use it as time to complain about things not going well and sometimes that was good because it revealed problems. But 99% of the time, that isn’t what you should do. Sure if its affecting your work maybe but truthfully your manager wants to hear good things you’re doing. Now I talk about a few wins I have since our last 1-1 and talk a little about my career growth. Sometimes I ask questions about things only a manager would know (why X happened) and usually the explanation can be related to politics. And also just smalltalk.
