I’m talking about the infamous email from the CEO saying everyone at Shopify has to requalify for their job every year and improve 40% YoY. What impact did this have on SWEs at Shopify? Did it make you anxious about keeping your job? How do you even improve 40% every year (and in what dimensions??)
That email was sent mid last year apparently, only leaked now. From what my friends tell me it's still a chill place but likely depends on the team
This dude is a wannabe! It’s still pretty chill place to relax.
to reiterate: it was from last year and that specific phrasing is ignored. the spirit of the phrase was that very one should be improving and broadening their impact over time, and our reviews reflect that. not up or out, but “if you aren’t improving or broadening year over year, let’s dig into why” the 40% thing can and is ignored as any kind of quantitative measure
Didn’t he then go on to say he means every word and has carefully thought about phrasing?
shrug, i can only tell you how the email is taken internally. the 40% number, or any kind of quantitative measure of year over year improvement, has never come up in any review, and is it reflect in any of our documentation on growth or leveling guidelines.
The dude quite rational at times like stating his team "not a family". What happened to him now? 40% of what is to be improved? It doesn't make any sense. I'd prefer Godfather-esque bosses who call their teams their family and buys them drinks every Thursday night 🙏
