I am in final stage with a start and trying to negotiate the offer. What shall I negotiate hard on, base or equity (it'll be options)? I am neutral on the outlook of the company, it will probably exit but may not be a super hit Edit: to clarify, I am excited about the company, but since its early stage, i may need to exercise options, pay taxes etc which has a >0% chance of being worthless. Thats why I am hesitant to negotiate hard on equity
Cash is king
Equity. But don’t join a startup you’re not stoked about
This is just my opinion but: Early stage - only join if you truly believe in the company, if you believe, optimize for equity. Mid stage - optimize for base, realizing equity is still a risk and likely further out. Upside is decent no matter what so don’t nickel and dime equity. Late stage - these companies often offer liquidation events, if not, IPO could be soon so go equity. Don’t join a startup you don’t believe in or has bad business fundamentals. Go for base if you have to because they’re overvalued.
I do believe in the company. Just trying to figure out if I should try to stretch the equity part, since I hear getting a lot of equity in early stage may become detrimental as you have to exercise options and pay taxes for money that you may never realize
More profit = more taxes, so it’s always a good thing… the strike price could become an issue but just buy what u can afford. You can always buy the rest with the profit if there’s an exit and you’re still there.
OP what startup?
Early startup options have 99% chance of being worthless
I stopped reading at “hard on” 😆
A friend’s company allowed him to choose any split, and he said all base on the spot
🤣
You will leave before the startup folds in a couple of years. Go with Cash. The next booM is 10 years away.
equity. the entire point of going to startup is that sweet sweet equity. if you wanted cash go to any other company
100% base, very low chance you'll realize the equity esp if it's early stages, also why join early stage is you're not excited about it lot of risk
No i am very excited, but its certainly not hot shot EV or AI company. Suits my background very well though
