Wife is a Product Manger and I'm SWE working in the bay area with total TC = 400K a year. We plan to have kids in 2 years and our parents would visit us every now and then. Do you recommend a Single-family house or Townhouse or Condo?
Get a SFH with a yard big enough to have a nice little swing set and play catch. You’ll want 4 BR so that probably puts you in the $1.5m range, but you should be able to afford the mortgage. In your 30s, one or both of you could upgrade jobs and get to 600k TC within the next couple years easily.
dont spend big on house, that will give u zero tolerance on job security
job is not secure nowadays layoff are very offten
You need good neighborhood with good school.
The one in the best school district you can afford without loosing sleep at night? Also jobs are here today, maybe not here tomorrow, but your mortgage with monthlies will only go up up up.. word is a recession will soon follow.
3 bedroom SFH is fine. Your kids can share a room, but that’s a few years from now so don’t worry about it. Definitely SFH though, if you have kids. You can definitely afford it with that TC if you avoid lifestyle inflation.
RV
Anything that’s actually attached to land
Stay close to at least one parents work
Get the fuck out of the bay area and get a tech company wfh job both of you if you want a good life.
Townhouse close to work is better than SFH with long commute. Make some extra memories with the time saved, rather than having to spend more time cleaning a bigger house.
Couldn’t agree more. Have seen people buying big houses far away, and then eventually renting a condo close to work because they got tired of the commute

Save some money for the kids expense, u will need them. I have two kids, and my monthly expense on kids are a lot higher than home mortgage. Also u need to consider your wife quit job and stay home take care pf kids etc. Also u may need to spend money on nanny.. Nanny costs A LOT
