My intention is not to disparage the company but it’s out of genuine curiosity. They are essentially a hotel room listing company with a nice looking website and mobile apps. Hilton has a website and mobile apps as well. Why aren’t they considered a tech company?
what is the definition of tech company?
One whose employees can sign up on Blind.
IMO its a tech company when it pays swe really well
So not Microsoft then?
Burn nice
They are a medium by which people exchange ervices, they themselves are not the service provider . And they accomplish it via technology. Voila, tech company
Usually a tech company pushes the envelope on some front within technology. Airbnb has done some great things with design and marketing for sure. But have they really broken new ground in any technological area?
i wouldn’t say broken ground like other tech companies, but has shown competence through open source contributions like airflow, superset, enzyme
They’re a tech company to me but their tech stacks are not challenging to attract talents
What makes Square a tech company? They didn’t invent the credit card or electronic payments or point of sale systems. Just brought the design into the 21st century. Seems pretty similar to AirBnB.
There are a lot of technical achievements both in hardware and software that made Square possible. Taxi dispatchers existed previously, but Lyft and Uber pushed the envelope that make them legitimate technology companies. What has Airbnb done uniquely on the technological front?
Their product help increase short term accommodation resources and hence lowering the prices of the entire market(also affecting hotel business since less people choose hotels). They provide the platform that handles the transaction unlike Craigslist, and that makes the deal easier for both sides. That said they still have a long way to go, and I don’t like where they are going. They should have been aiming for the entire traveling E2E experience and move fast instead of only doings things they dim “cool”.
They make money with their software. Not by renting rooms.
Aren’t they disrupting a space through technology? That’s kind of foundational.
Expedia is a tech company, so is Airbnb
Doesn’t matter. I make 530k TC with 4 yoe
That’s the attitude right there :)

Who are these retards asking for dictatorship in India?
Because Airbnb is not a Hotel company. Airbnb is a marketplace platform company. Also, this is like saying why is amazon considered a tech company, why isn’t Safeway considered a tech company? Edit: not saying being at Safeway is bad though. Paycheck keeps coming, I don’t ask questions.
I like how you attempt to throw shade on Bezos instead of calling OP's Square as a point of sale terminal.
Greg is at Airbnb now, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
