So many smart techies what stops you from starting a business? Must have been a thought with how unsure a career is and mental health strain everyone is under? EDIT: seems as if the majority of people don’t know where to start or are kinda scared. What type of support or information would help you get started? What would change that for you!
Immigration status/H1B
You can’t do YouTube or a plugin or something? Even in your native country?
Can't on h1b. I actually have a viable path with lead on some paying clients
I will be your personal american
My brother in law is a tech entrepreneur. He’s pushing 50 now. He’s tried and failed after years and years of trying. He’s got two kids and bills to pay. He’s worked like a dog and not much to show for it. I’m sure he’s not the only one.
I hear you, I don’t suggest quitting your job but building something on the side even a YouTube channel worked on for a few years can bring in a sizable income. My question is why only chase career success?
OP I take it you're single and with time on your hands? Wait till you have a family 😄 and let's chat again about side hustles then.
Starting a business is easy Starting a business that makes more than 400k per year and is scalable to 10M is fuckin difficult mate
No good idea for starting a business. And making bank at google.
I’m not a genius software developer, and there are only so many hours in a day. Recently started building a server for fun, home lab stuff. Checking in scripts to self hosted gitlab, learning rust to create a distributed filesystem from scratch. It’s taken me months to get this far, and a few thousand dollars. Imagine quitting my job to do this full time, and then it FAILS (the most likely outcome).
Software tools are not the only business model. There are thousands of other things you can do.
Good luck! I believe in you!
Starting a business totally sucks. And then god help you if the business is successful.
Actually if the business is successful then you just hire capable people to run it for you. The problem is the time from inception till it becomes successful (if it does at all), that time period is a LOT of work and not for everyone.
nothing stops me
The time commitment. For the business owners I know, they are consumed by their business for the first few years to get it off the ground. After that, they’re still routinely putting in more hours than the typical salaried employee. If entrepreneurship is what you love, go for it, but that’s not the life for me.
what kinds of business though? Media seems low time commitment with lots of degrees of freedom
Media? You mean like start a podcast or YouTube channel?
Oh so starting a business is chill and guaranteed success? Good to know!
No but if both are stressful and hard why not doing it for yourself vs a company where you can get let go anytime?
i have always been opposed to starting my own business, because i've seen first hand how difficult it can be. But honestly with how hard I work anyway, starting to seriously consider it. Theres no security or growth prospects in the current environment..so if I have to work like a dog might as well do it for some potential upside doing something I enjoy.
