I have no prior internship or work experience in the tech industry beforehand. However I somehow managed to snatch a FB new grad offer for this summer. I am pretty nervous since don’t know what to expect about this very first job. The first few weeks would be the bootcamp. I read that I will get to try out different teams during this time. And through reading Blind, I gathered that the manager will be the one that make or break your work life. So I am just curious what characteristics should I look out for in the managers during the bootcamp? Edit: TC or GTFO: 160
Google did quite a bit of research on good managers. It’s been a while but project oxygen found 8 key attributes of a successful manager. Check it out. One interesting finding was that technical knowledge was one of the lowest rated needs for a good manager.
That was a good read. Thanks for the suggestion! ohh that’s quite interesting. Seems like I saw some mixed suggestions regarding the technical side of the managers.
At the very least, you want someone that has your back and can effectively prevent shit from rolling downhill.
that’s definitely the goal haha
good managers are hard to find because most companies reward technical merits with a position to manage people and the two are disjunctive
Not true every where. Most companies reward Yes sit and boot licking with a managerial position. It’s only about how you manage up.
hopefully I can find one 🙏🙏
Make sure your manager has been SDE before not PM QA or test.
Couldn’t agree more
ohh got it. Thanks!
Ask the manager what the most impactful thing the team has done recently is, then how they did it. If the manager uses I and me too much then their focus is visibility not team performance.
Great indicator
wow, that’s a great and straightforward way to figure it out. Definitely gonna try to take this into consideration during my bootcamp. Thanks!

Israeli precision-guided munition likely killed group of children playing foosball in Gaza, weapons experts say
First things, you won’t know about a person until you work for them. Note for them, not with them. People are different in those roles. Good Managers 1. Are fair. 2. Don’t micromanage. 3. Aren’t jealous of or compete with their reports. 4. Take constructive feedback and work to improve themselves. Here feedback means from their reports. 5. Are not afraid of growing their team members. 6. Will establish goals with you instead of being top down. Thereafter help you in achieving those goals by removing all bottle necks.
thanks for list! definitely gonna note down and focus on those while trying out teams.
