What type of house to buy?

Spouse and I are planning on buying our first home. We are a DINK at the moment but will probably have kids in 2-3 years. Household financials: Base: 415k (pre tax) Bonus: 60k (pre tax) TC: 840k (pre tax) Monthly take home post tax (incl bonus): 20k Net worth: 1.1 M (stock appreciation) We are looking for houses in good school districts. What should we ideally target?

If you are in the Bay area, you will need to get a >2M house if you want kids

Why do you say so? I thought daycare expenses will make it tight after kid is born

The thing is that your baby is going to cry at night. If your house is too small, everyone in the house will be able to hear it and nobody is gonna get any sleep

@op we are pretty much in same situation except that we already have a toddler. What’s your age and is that household TC? Also how is your take home post tax salary so low if your TC is 840K!! What are you excluding?

Most of it is RSUs and stock appreciation.

How will you manage to keep that TC for coming years, if it is due to stock appreciation! The TC will go down as companies will adjust the number of rsu for next appraisal.

Never buy anything that has HOA. It's going to make you pay more than you deserve

Assuming you are commuting to Mountain View for LinkedIn, there’s a related thread discussing housing pricing in the South Bay: Housing: "How is this 4 bedroom SFH in San Jose/Campbell priced so low? (Housing)" https://www.teamblind.com/us/s/fJdJACYo
