Would like to get some datapoints to benchmark myself against. TC: $500 Airbnb credits
It’s been said that a family of four would need at least 300 K to be considered middle class in the bay. That sounds about right to me.
True, but that is typically reached by 2 people making 150k, not a single breadwinner making 300k.
Yep
Middle class is 120k to 500m/year.
No matter how high your TC is, if you need a job to pay your expenses, you're middle class.
Words of wisdom.
This
The jobs you mention either own their home for decades, have some sort of subsidy, or a bad commute. It is difficult to live in what used to be upper middle class neighborhoods unless you make on the order of the 300k mentioned above. Many folks live in areas we don’t think of as core Bay Area, even though they are Bay Area because they are less expensive. To live in SF, the peninsula, Cupertino - you need $$$. Parts of the east bay and South Bay are more affordable.
Median income for SF is roughly $118k.

Middle class is not what you think it is. Their income would be around or lower than 50k
What? That's below the poverty line in the bay
You call them poor if you like
