What’s going on at Intercom?

Why is their CEO RTing Tucker Carlson, posting pics with RFK Jr., and ending support for Pride and the company’s ERGs? For a company that makes such a big deal out of their principles, it seems like they’re operating without any. #intercom https://www.irishtimes.com/business/2023/07/02/intercom/

Doing a Basecamp.

Is interesting though as I've often been nauseated by how well they sold themselves as this perfect place. Reviews now show it's nothing like they advertised.

The CEO has allegations of sexually harassing staff. A few years ago, they replaced him with their CFO who apparently improved the culture and the company was operating well financially too. They seemed to be on track for IPO. Suddenly they bring back this expelled CEO without much explanation. Based on his tweets, he thinks he’s somehow the Irish Elon, and seems to be bringing back a toxic culture. Even if they didn’t outwardly stop support for pride/ERGs, they made a dubious move in bringing back such a questionable character to be the face of this company.

I came across that on Twitter when he returned - a few Irish tech journalists talked about the sexual assault stuff. He's one of the founders - maybe he had to go away from a short time?

Good for him. It’s time for Pride to quietly go into the sunset.

I remember when it was inappropriate to discuss what you do with your genitalia while at work. If you wanted to know about my sexuality, you had to meet me for drinks after work. I’m really not sure how we got to openly celebrating certain deviations of sexuality at work, but I definitely find it unprofessional and awkward at the least.

Meta bunnysmol Jul 3, 2023

Your usage of the term “deviations” is very revealing. At last check, no one is ever forced to participate in Pride events or initiatives at work, or any other events focused on specific groups of people, for that matter. If you are uncomfortable with gay people, that’s your problem. I find it hilarious when people act like “sexuality” is shoved in their faces when at most, many company simply change their logo on social media (usually a performative move) and internally there’s simply an optional Slack channel for people who wish to join. All of this shit is pretty easy to ignore. That still doesn’t stop kneejerk reactions and revealing takes from people who somehow equate simply knowing that there are people from certain communities in their workplace to acting like they’re subjected to a nonstop barrage of hearing about the specifics of other people’s sexuality. Get a grip.

Now you’re assuming I’m not a gay man, and that I don’t have my own personally preferred deviations. This is why these conversations suck. It’s none of your business what I do in the bedroom. I don’t want to tell you or any of my coworkers. And I really don’t want to know about what they do either.

Intercom EoghanStan Jul 3, 2023

Eoghan is a very reasonable CEO, though his twitter likes can get a bit deranged sometimes. He is a typical right wing / libertarian Silicon Valley character, not far from the likes of Marc Andressen, David Sacks, Paul Graham and Elon Musk. That is not bad company to have. There was a question about Pride in the latest all hands and he answered well: Pride has become political and Intercom is focused on building the best customer support product and there is no time for distractions at the company level. Of course, you can do whatever you want in your private life. Intercom is very inclusive and will remain so. The article paints a totally fake picture. There is no social unrest (besides toxicity in the blind channel). Yes, some folks are annoyed, but nobody is quiting. P.s. The previous CEO was a total disaster in terms of what really matters (product and financials). Eoghan came back to clean her mess and bring focus to the company.

Incredibly cringe post and username

Fair play for weighing in, Eoghan

It sounds like it’s in Ireland, not the US. (And Ireland split from Britain over religious disputes) If this happened to a Chinese or Saudi Arabian company would we be shocked? Look at all these ugly ethnocentric americans looking down on other countries with their “superior” ideologies and beliefs.

They replaced the old CEO who was great with this clown, and he is an egomaniac. Elon Jnr they call him. A complete narcissist who is trying to enact total control over everything and everyone. Literally has his team micro managing so much bullshit, making big promises and not delivering. How people can still be supporting him I don't know. Embarrassing for the Irish.
