Hi, I was just wondering what type of work cleared (TS/SCI clearance and above) software engineers do at Amazon, Oracle, and Microsoft. I've heard that you are mostly doing ops work and in some cases, you are baited-and-switched into doing SRE. Are there any specific teams/orgs in which you are actually doing software development? Do you work on creating products/services for the government sponsors? Are there any remote roles for cleared folks? Thanks in advance!
It depends on your savvy. Secret vs top secret is irrelevant besides the pay bump (half is for secret, the other half is top secret) but I know folks that were hired in as systems engineers with clearance, but I also know a couple swe's that have the clearance and the pay, but do regular software engineer work besides a week or two a year during region builds
Nobody is going to tell any of you the truth about this. They can’t. And won’t.
Skiddies been watching too many war movies. Here in the real world, things are a lot more mundane
Yeah honestly. If we did want to talk about it sitting bored out of your mind in a windowless room ain't too exciting a story to tell anyways lol.
I just remember some guy on Amazon saying he was the only person with Clarence in his organization and he was termination proof. No clearance no project progression. Pretty good cert to have it seems
Definitely no coding at Microsoft. We are bleeding any remotely good talent because of this and not being paid well enough.
Why are job listings asking for Software Engineers then? Why don't they put SRE or something else? That sucks.
Because the talent bar at Microsoft is the same for SRE/SWE. They want to attract the talent for the cleared roles and are baiting and switching people. Every team has been the same from my experience and anyone telling you that you will be coding is lying
At oracle. No remote. Oncall requires you to drive into the office if paged even overnight. Not always more money. They make excuses. Operator, runbook, change ticket work. No coding. No internet access in office. No access to confluence from classified area. Dead end job
I didn't think of the fact there is no personal internet access even, what do you do on the toilet?

For ts/sci clearance at Amazon, you get paid 40k extra (not in the tc calculation) if your team does some work that involves this clearance. Some aws services live in special regions that require this clearance, and yeah most of the work there is ops.
