Question says it all for regular Program Managers vs TPM. I have recruiters reaching out and curious what it's really like. Answers I'm getting from recruiters are the usual loosely goosey fluff. In my previous larger company, I was able to have ownership, drive, a lot more input and influence on product, technicals, and operations as a PgM because the role is embedded within a functional unit and progresses upward in that unit (or cross-functionally if there's an opportunity). At Twitter, where I'm a TPM, many of us find it more like a middle man to keep things moving. Very few TPMs at Twitter are in a program where they can actually drive from idea to end of cycle. Despite what's going on at Twitter, I had no intention of looking because I want to see how this will play out. But I do miss the much larger scope and more interesting work I used to do, and there are recruiters knocking to take advantage of the shake up. You confirmed what I heard about pgm at twitter. I guess it depends on how much the company values program management in general. It can always shift from one department vs another.
Thanks. I guess I didn't due enough diligence before I joined Twitter if you've heard about it. Is it department dependent at Twilio?
It wasn’t too long ago, I wouldn’t sweat it. We have pgm embedded throughout org, which is a good sign that there is support for the role. We are trying to change the narrative and showcase value
I’m a Program Manager at Amazon and I’m struggling with this as well. My next step would be Senior PM but then I have no idea, principal or somehow try to find a manager position. Career progression in tech can be a nightmare.

At Amazon it is pure hell
And so I've heard lol. It's not team dependent at all?
Not really, it’s a company culture thing.
