Me. Penny on a dollar is my fees.
Norbert's Gambit Find an interlisted stock like RY and a brokerage that allows you to have both USD and CAD accounts (any Canadian brokee). Use USD to buy the stock on the NYSE, call the broker and journal the shares over to the CAD side, and immediate sell them for CAD. You can do this while on the phone with the broker to get the whole transaction find in a couple of minutes. Try it with a small number of shares first to test the process before doing it with a large number. Three days later when the trades settle you will have CAD. Fees: cost of two trades plus the bid/ask spread plus a minute or so of market risk. If you are transferring a large amount of money (like proceeds from sale of a house) this will save thousands versus the fees exchange places change.
Seems quite complicated for just $35k USD that I earned at my internship π But thanks though. Will need it once I graduate!
Yeah it'll probably only save you around $500 on $35000
Interactive Brokers. Costs about 0.01% to convert between USD and CAD. Banks would charge you 3%. Also a pretty good discount broker overall.
Western union is the cheapest
