I've been at Credit Karma for over six years. I've been trying, and failing, to get promoted to Senior for 3-4 years now. Last time I went up for promotion, I was on the verge of getting Senior but ended up at a newly invented level just below Senior. It's been 2 years since then. I transferred to a new team and have led some impactful projects. However, I think that maternity leave has set me back. Though my manager assures me that they will put me up for promotion in the next cycle, I feel that it's never going to happen. The lack of recognition is starting to affect my mental health. Every day, I feel frustrated and upset, possibly even downright depressed, because I don't have the title. I know that I could easily get the title bump if I switched companies, but I doubt anyone else can match my TC. I'm expecting to make 650k this year and next year. If I don't get the promo and/or Intuit stock does poorly, my equity will go down in 2023. We're also thinking about having a second child, and it seems easier to do so while at my current job instead of a new company where I need to prove myself all over again. I am fortunate to have a husband who also works in tech, and who's a far better engineer than me (tho I get paid way more lol). We're in a decent financial position, with total assets of ~3M. TC 650k #shouldistay
go into coast mode, prep interviews closer to. collect that stock and get fully ready to switch after baby leave
hold my beer 🍺 650k for swe2’s? how much did ck employees get during the merger, I saw bunch of gripe employees then stating they didn’t get much. Also, senior promotion is just manager discretion at Intuit and I wouldn’t quit with this golden handcuff. So you get to do swe2 work and get paid principal/director level cash? 🤒 I am a staff and I hardly crack 400k.
I'm not a SWE2, I'm a SWE4. I'm *capable* of Senior level work, but don't always get the right projects. *tear* I definitely know lots of folks who joined late and didn't get much, but I have been at CK for... way too long.
I get you but 650k is L6-L7 money even at Faang. You have to crack staff and above to make the bank and looks like you might have to wait it out from a financial sense.
Cant get past my 140 paling in comparison to your 640. I wish I had your problem lol. That said, mental health is a big deal. If its affecting you that bad then start getting on lc and start looking elsewhere.
I can't imagine you'd come close to that TC until staff level elsewhere. Sounds like you have a pretty good deal at the moment. Less responsibility than senior for comparable tc to staff 🤷♂️
"cries in $100k TC*
You make a lot of money. I don’t think you should care about tilte that much
What did I just see? 640k? :o
I second the opinion above. If I were you, I would coast as a swe2 with 650k and take 4-6 months maternity leave. You need to work 2/3x if you switch jobs, gain trust at the new place. Without sse title , it’s hard to get senior roles and I don’t think there are many companies which match 650k for l5 / l6 unless you just nail every minute of interviews.
This
That's a good point *sigh*. I've seen engineers perform at senior level on interviews at CK and get downleveled because they didn't already have the title or the right YOE. I've also seen engineers come in with 10-15 years of experience and the "Senior" title who couldn't code at all.
For SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS, my company could give me any title they liked. Literally anything. Not just a title; they could give me a new name. If I had to introduce myself as "Goofmonkey" for a year, for that money I'd do it. (Obligatory: TC 43k; don't have a title)
Thanks for making me laugh.
...you _were_ laughing at my idea and not my TC, I hope ...
