When to resign given travel and fixed joining date?

Folks, Would appreciate any advise. Spouse wants to quit her job, has another job she just got today. The other offer is suggesting last date to join as the day right after she is expected to return to US after international travel (tickets already booked, she flies very soon and has to go to take care of ailing family). We don't have enough time to resign now and also because she has "unlimited PTO" she wants to use those PTOs for a break before starting fresh in the next gig. So, 1) can she email Friday from her work laptop that she is resigning and will drop laptop the first business day? I understand this will get her blacklisted but not worried about that. 2) if this is too messy, any other recommendation? US citizen, so no visa issues. Please help!

Keep pushing back on the other job offer start date. Just say you’re traveling through that start date and can start 3-7 days later.

Unfortunately, can't. The ew company is a startup and says the position vanishes beyond the last date they've given. Could be all false, but we don't have a choice except to believe them. Also, she hates current job and wants to switch asap.

It’s bullshit on their end, unless it’s tied to an event such as a conference. I’ve had two startups try that with me too in my career.

Not a professional practice. I would give her her team sufficient time and negotiate new team for a new start date. I don’t care blacklist but as people move around she May cross her path with people. I wouldn’t hire anyone who would do this to me.

Perhaps you are right but given no chance to push join date and no way to change travel plans, either way it is unprofessional; few days of notice now or no notice with the approach in OP. Any other ideas?

Completely agree. Should give proper notice, and the new company should understand that. How do they expect anyone to give a two week notice that includes Christmas and New year's?!

Of course she can resign Friday effective that day and drop laptop next business day. It’s fucked up and irresponsible and disrespectful but can do it. I’m assuming she makes six figures plus so perhaps she can be an adult and give some respectful amount of notice to allow for transition out.

Google Tpjugz OP Dec 10, 2018

Like I mentioned, either way there's not sufficient notice. She flies in a few days so giving notice now is also not quite sufficient.

Then she should be a big girl and adjust the time tables in order to be responsible and give appropriate notice. Cut her personal travel short if that’s what it takes. Is it really that hard to be an adult and not selfish? Not like she isn’t being quite well compensated on both ends I’m sure.

Yeah. She might just need to go without the PTO. She can start that day, shes just trying to get a check for the vacation days. Consequences are consequences.
