A company with a long history of providing video calling services should've been able to capitalize on the current shelter in place situation. But it looks like Zoom has dwarfed Skype's growth. Why?
Good question , I am curious to Skypes fault too
Microsoft happened
Not true. Having been there myself, I can tell you Microsoft helped, and we missed key opportunities at Skype (like the rise of whatsapp / not focusing on mobile in time) due to our own distractions (if you look at a timeline, for example, going private and figuring out being sold/IPO)
Didn’t MS screw all Skype employees during acquisition? And then most left?
Terrible UI/UX, not as easy to onboard users...Day2 happened!!!
It’s more like how zoom succeeded. I credit zoom for allowing a call without signing up
And the fact it’s stupid easy to use. The learning curve is not steep on it - even when you’re talking about the greater functionalities. Throughout this COVID thing I’ve gotten really good at video conversations - hands down Zoom is easiest. Actual Skype for home is the hardest and I have the most issues with it. That said, I do love how easy Skype for Business - Lync - and the Teams integration is.
They didn’t have a proper vision for mobile
Can confirm. I worked at Skype when we were starting to try to focus on mobile. Gurdeep was a joke.
Didn't they release something like Skype 4 Life? IIRC, it had Snapchat stories but with a 7 day life time. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/09/microsoft-ditches-skypes-snapchat-feature-will-optimize-ui-for-calls-and-chat/
Because Microsoft bought it lmao.
Microsoft completely destroys the companies that it buys. Their horrid culture crushes the acquired company. LinkedIn is an exception for now.
LinkedIn, GitHub, Minecraft off the top of my head. All big companies have crushed successful young products. It's hard to take a successful product and make it successful in the long term, even as an independent company. Think Snap. Some acquisitions would have failed on their own given enough time. Now do that all while integrating the code, vision, employees and culture, with the rest of your legacy company. It's hard as hell. Acquisitions are a huge risk. But you only need a few big successes to make up for the many acquisitions that never becameanything.
LinkedIn already sucked my dude
You're repeating Hasan Minaj's word.
They forced you to have an outlook account. Clunky UI/UX. Zero mobile strategy. No integration with calendar (look at Google Meet). Slow pace of innovation.
Skype is a joke - nobody really disputes that. Teams is the new Skype but way better. The metrics speak for itself. Outlook and Teams integrate. Join a call through Outlook, join a call through teams directly. The calendar on both apps is the same. Creating a calendar invite? Hit the Team's meeting button to automatically add it to the invite and creat a link. It's come a long ways. The integration between the two is unbeatable right now. Calling, email, chat, and channels, all integrated. Also, RIP Oovoo. Group video calling was way ahead of the curve.
^ You just need copy G Suite. Most of what you said has existed in Gmail/Meet/Calendar for years.
