Lack of diversity in engineering division at X
Asking for a friend. Diversity program/ rotational program/ easier interview/ whatever, which company makes it easy for new bootcamp-graduated female to get their first job as software engineer? The program does NOT need to target only female, but it would be great if it is. TC: 350k yoe:10
easier interview doesnt make sense. why do you need a company that gives easy interview to ONLY female? why not a company that gives easy interview to all (such as amazon / microsoft)?
To exploit diversity hiring of course ;) the post explicitly says that targeting only female isn't necessary, just need an easier entry for her first job
Every Company
Your friend does not want to be a part of a "diversity program" as you and a lot of people on Blind think it to be. This is because the very same people will be her teammates, who will doubt her capabilities and push her to forever low priority and unimportant tasks, thus limiting her scope to move up. She will have to extra justify everything she does, as compared to her colleagues, who will by default be considered capable. There's no point in being on such a tough road. Better be at a place where such feelings are not rampant, and where people acknowledge the work you do, irrespective of your sex. Isn't that what everyone needs?
This
Agree. However That is assuming people stick around for long. With the 1.5y-2y job changing cycle she will be fine. Getting her first tech job however is a bigger problem - I'm sure we all remember how hard it is to find our 1st new grad job
Folks keep unnecessary suggestions aside and answer if u know. I am pretty sure OP is aware about all this and need of actionable answer.
Giving OP the kind of actionable answer they want is detrimental to the individual's career, the performance of the companies, and the perception of women's capability in the workplace. No.
Yeah...agree with u. But if one starts putting what is right...and wrong...everyone gets diverted from the post..OP with 10 YOE knows this...
Usually big companies have money to waste on unproductive engineers. Startups have no choice but to hire based on skill. So try any big (>10000) company pretty much. Booking is one of them, but i doubt your friend would move to amsterdam.
@booking, what are salaries compared to US? I would love to move Amsterdam from Bay Area, but not sure if I will be able to afford anything there. I have been there twice as tourist and check some real estate listings. Prices quite close to California imho.
I manage to save 2-3k per mo, but i live alone. Might be less with a family. Booking’s salaries depend on role, yoe etc. “check some real estate listings” Where were you looking? I highly doubt you can find a 60 sq m apartment for 1500e (1650$) in the bay area. Maybe in oakland or some ghetto place like that.
Her bootcamp’s placement program will have the information about these things.
Will look into those resources. This is Not really the smartest question to ask by herself out in the open :P the sjw wolfs will eat her alive
Microsoft. There’s pressure from recruiter and some hiring managers to give a pass to some diversity candidates. Another option are apprenticeship programs where you get in based on a written essay, no interview. After completing the 3 month paid program there’s a > 50% chance of getting a full time offer. Again without interview.
Google. Need to fill that diversity quota
Pinterest is big on diversity.
Easier interview doesn't exist regardless of the crap people post here. Google has eng residents which is a great rotation program.
So...the easier entry = engineering residency. Not sure how you thought this helped your case lol
Definitely exists in Google.
