Finance to tech or tech to finance?
finance skills easier to teach
Lol... Aren't u a dev
I’d argue that while finance skills are easier to learn, its easier to actually get hired from finance into tech vs from tech into finance. People in finance care about prestige too much.
Finance to Tech
Assuming both candidates have both skills equally? Definitely easier to get into tech and it’s not even close. If you have the skills in tech, you’re hired. In finance, you have to get in via undergrad summer analyst program or an MBA. There is little to no lateral hiring from anywhere but other investment banks.
This ^
It depends what role you are looking for in finance and in tech. If you want to stay in a technology role then I would say tech to finance is easier
Although finance skills are generally speaking easier to learn than tech skills (because some people don’t have an aptitude for math/tech kind of knowledge), the hiring process for finance is more selective than for tech. In finance, your skill set is just one of many factors that are taken into consideration. The other key factors include your pedigree, your book (aka connections), your ability to influence decisions cross-functionally, etc. Overall, anyone who learns basic tech skills/coding can get a tech job, but no anyone who learns basic finance/accounting skills can get a finance job because the skill set isn’t the only prerequisite.
Yeah, I think part of this is spoke and demand. There are way more start ups and roles in tech than compared to the most prominent banks/ jobs. That said, my view might be a bit skewed from going from MBA to bulge bracket bank and seeing lots of friends go into tech. Banking was a more competitive process. That said, if you are specifically talking about developers, and not product managers or finance strategists, I'm sure both transitions are very hard.
Finance depends on who your parents are and who you know. If you were born Trump then you are Trump. Tech is for people who have not much resource but smart logically.
That might be true of an analyst but definitely a gross overgeneralization. I had zero connection to banking or connections to get into a good MBA program. Zero strings to pull. I worked hard, got into a top 10 finance program and did well in banking recruiting to be an MBA hire at a bulge bracket bank. (Not DB 🤪) Regretted that and got out, ha ha. I don't think most legacies, if you will, last very long unless they're truly hard workers. Dead weight hurts everyone on the team. Just my opinion though.
MBA is in fact a donation of money to upper layer to get a finance slave admission. Nothing about IQ.
Tech to finance back office roles? Sure, why not. Middle office? Maybe.
Most tech ppl can be good at finance, most finance ppl can’t be good at tech.
Duh.
