My impression is that one thing Meta has done, especially since 2016, is really nail advertiser friendly moderation. That is, every part of the platform is somewhere an advertisement can be safely placed. The problem with this as applied to threads vs Instagram or Facebook, is a core feature of Twitter is the PvP element, which inherently is negative, hostile and decidedly not advertisers favorite thing. I think threads as "text oriented Instagram" completely missed what makes microblogging platforms useful to users. What do you think? Update: to clear up confusion, I am actually a bigger fan of Zuckerberg than Musk (insofar as I'm a "fan" of either). And I don't want Threads to fail. I just think it has the problem I outlined above.
I don’t think pvp is required for a platform to work well. But even if it does look at Instagram comment section. Thousands of people arguing and fighting everyday. I just got into one with randoms a few days ago. The thing is IG moderation is actually better than twitters. It’s “censorship” but it works well to remove most of the bullshit and flagging comments that may get reported in advance. The ai based moderation removes hate speech garbage while still allows people to argue which I think is the key to a successful platform.
My broad impression is while of course there are arguments a plenty on both IG and fb, the system is built to contain them, and to make them hard to stumble across. I get the impression that's also the intent of threads - no easy looking for qts, and I'd bet the algo down ranks fighting/negativity. And I get that! I bet the pitch to the celebrities was "Twitter but without lots of people attacking you and filling your mentions". And I get why that appeals to celebrities and advertisers alike. But I think it creates an overly sterile environment , where it's hard to grow organically the kind of content that does best in microblogging environments. My objection isn't to particular content filters, I understand moderation is necessary etc. But I think the current design is overly sterile and will pull the power users back to Twitter. And the rest will follow.
Threads is unusable and will only get worse.
Twitter is like if you are having a chat with a stranger in an elevator, and then some random bystander comes up and starts talking about vaccines and politics and how you’re all leftist marxists etc etc.
The same people exist on IG. And it’s annoying as fuck. But thankfully those comments are removed more often
Both can coexist but more moderation means less engagement and time spent.
A reasonable answer from someone with skin in the game. Its obvious one will be a right/ liberterian less censored platform while the other left and more censored. People are too emotional to think that someone else with a differing oppinion (right or wrong) even exists.
Biggest issue for Twitter is that it’s struggling as a business. Advertisers seem to have fled the platform. I only see Blew Chew ads on my feed these days. Wasn’t the case a few weeks ago. Don’t know if that’s true for everyone else.
Twitter is so bad now that this won’t matter.
People rooting for the demise of twitter are the same people who thought trump would never get elected in 2016. Theres a variety of thoughts + oppinions and those views will go to the platform that supports their venting the best. It would be nice if opposing sides could have a conversation on one platform, but that obviously will never happen. It wouldnt surprise me the least bit if either side (mostly the left) could disappear the other side in the most brutal and violent way... theyd probably say it was the most humane and compassionate thing to do.
^ this is why moderation is good, kids. Or else you get an echo chamber of radical ideas and you end up saying weird stuff like this
Stuff like what? Like people should have conversations about their difference of oppinion? Wow, didnt realize that was such a radical thing to say 🙄
It will pick up once they allow creating accounts not linked to instragram. People love positing shit anonymously. Look a blind
Threads sucks, and Twitter sucks too ….
The PvP attitude is why a lot of people left Twitter. They don’t want that type of experience. Knowing that you may be attacked in the replies prevents people from engaging with content, only viewing. Hopefully the people on Threads will stay pleasant and Meta can monetize it

Threads is still a MVP. We should see more features rolling out soon and then we can compare 2 products perhaps 15-20 months down the line!!
while I think more features will make it better, I don't think it addresses the mismatch I indicated.
It won't address it. Threads will be a heavily censored 'safe space'.
