Why Uber's Reputation?

I'm specifically talking about technical reputation in the industry. According to paysa's algorithm, uber is ranked first for talent. I would think having uber on CV would be a huge strong point then, better than google. I don't care about ethics or morals or what the company has done. I care what I'll learn, who I'll work with, and what future doors will be opened. Yet all this talk about working at uber being shameful. Please do help me understand this. My interview is coming up next month and I'm excited. I consider myself a strong candidate.

Try asking the paysa people

Oracle Tomcat14 Jan 15, 2018

If you don’t care about the ethics and corruption issue then why even ask here? There’s nothing to understand. You are a perfect fit.

Microsoft live2work OP Jan 15, 2018

I wasn't aware of the ethics and corruption issues. I heard there were issues and never looked into it. I don't care for PR. I only care for technical excellence.

Science without conscience... look it up!

Microsoft fNEH83 Jan 15, 2018

Uber is technically prestigious. All big-tech companies and unicorns will look nice on your resume. You’re over analyzing. Anyways, what’s more important than the company name is the team you’ll be working on.

I feel paysa is the biggest scam site. Not in reference to Uber, but I have no idea where they get their data from.

Microsoft live2work OP Jan 15, 2018

From user input, and their algo is semi-open. For example I put my own data in there and it becomes part of their anslysis.

Apple pch053 Jan 15, 2018

Isn’t that the same what Glassdoor does? In what way Paysa differs from Glassdoor?

Microsoft mmh Jan 15, 2018

How is Uber ranked first in terms of talent? Do you have a link? Ethics and integrity are important, especially when it comes to task assignment. Corrupt managers generally assign low-technical high-risk projects to people they consider as threats. This is worst case of cause, but do keep in mind that you will only be treated based on talent in an organization that fairly evaluate employees’ capabilities.

Microsoft live2work OP Jan 15, 2018

If that were happening, you would have technically strong people leaving. But the data suggests otherwise. I'm waiting to hear from an insider about this.

Microsoft mmh Jan 15, 2018

again, I don’t see funneling data on paysa. where’d you get it?

Apple pch053 Jan 15, 2018

I am in touch with a couple of 3D computer vision related teams in Uber and I can say they are pretty good teams (from technical standpoint). I will interview with Uber around March timeframe. From my career and learning, either of those teams will be a good option for me. So looking forward to (and preparing for) the interview.

People will worry that you will bring toxic Uber culture with you into their company.

Microsoft Jim Raynor Jan 15, 2018

Uber outpaced Google in automated driving without doing a lot of experiments... Wait.

Apple StYE24 Jan 15, 2018

Uber has lost a lot of talented engineers, a huge chunk of their self driving team left after the Otto acquisition

Cisco SlowBoat Jan 15, 2018

You’re overthinking this. Fact 1: Uber has talented engineers Fact 2: Uber has a PR problem with the general public, and potentially with other tech employers (cultural fit is a thing, you know). You may be judged negatively for having worked there. Which one do you care about more?

Microsoft live2work OP Jan 15, 2018

Imho, if I were a badass startup looking to get ahead with some risks of getting caught, I would love to take the best talent who are also stone cold killers. And furthermore these are the sort of people I want to be surrounded by in my future. This industry is being rapidly pussified.

Cisco SlowBoat Jan 15, 2018

IMO, same of Uber’s controversies crossed the line but others were legit business practices. The problem with hard-charging cultures is that it’s hard to ban just the bad stuff while keeping the good.
