I am a SWE with deep passion in infrastructure and low level details: I love understanding distributed systems, I love thinking about cloud networking architectures, ... to the point where I thought about becoming a devops in my next role, since infrastructure stuff is genuinely more exciting to me than SWE. However, the vast majority of devops I encounter in my path terribly suck: they get stuff done just by copying and pasting random stuff they find online, and when you try to enter into a deep enough technical discussion (e.g. how some network traffic exactly flows through the system, or what are the availability corner cases for a certain component) they start throwing random and idiotic thoughts at you hoping to convince you about their competence, until I basically deem them as completely incompetent and work around them. Due to how bad these people are on average, I’m afraid that if I switch from SWE to this area I will also be labeled as “generally incompetent” and might be a step back for my career? TC: 350
Because competent ones will move to SWE roles for higher pay. In my experience about 10% of devops engineers are good.
I’d say that’s accurate, unfortunately.
The difference is that you love thinking about cloud networking architectures, while they are in the trenches making them work 24x7. That makes for a different urgency of purpose and focus.
I’ve been assigned to do project work with many of them in the past and, even when there were no fires or trenches to deal with (these were green field projects), they just couldn’t understand most things, and kept slapping crappy solution on top of crappy solution.
As Erlich Bachman would say “ you just disappeared into your own asshole”
Lol 😂
Can you explain me what’s wrong in what I said?
