All around I see people complaining and wanting to leave Microsoft. In my experience WLB is amazing and although other companies pay better pay is not terrible. I am curious because Microsoft has a very high rating (4.1) but all I see are complaints. Are those that hate Microsoft just more vocal? Yoe: 0 TC: 90k (intern)
Is your TC 90k in Redmond?
I’m an intern lol
Goog has similar wlb for 1.5 to 2x pay if u negotiate for example tho. Do the same thing for like 2x def seems better although grass might just be greener
You're seeing a tiny subset of Microsoft employees in blind. Everyone using blind is underpaid, whether they're making $1 million TC or $200k TC.
Null hypothesis
They're underpaid, top talent, and never deserved PIP
Just delete blind. I plan on deleting it after I switch to my next job.
Same. I mostly just use this to search for comp packages and interview formats
My partner spent almost 15 years at Microsoft and did quite well although he finally left because of the toxicity that Ballmer brought. Friends say it is 100% betteri now.
Microsoft is a great company and grass is always greener on the other side. If you’re searching for the highest of TC, Microsoft may not be it. But if you’re looking for a place with great company culture under Satya, being an industry leader, job stability, being around generally good people, and more than fair compensation, this is a excellent place to start your career (since you’re an intern). Blind is toxic so keep that in mind. Source: in Microsoft > 10 years.
Great place to work overall. I worked there for 5 years until last year. I left because once you hit Senior, promotion is super slow / impossible. Also, despite stellar reviews, bonuses weren’t great and neither were raises. I left for a promo and $100K more a year
Two problems: compensation and low hiring bar (some orgs are uglier than others). I think the two are related. Nobody will be starving on MS TC, let’s get that out there. But, it is lower compared to many other options within reach for the SWEs and PMs. This makes buying real estate in particular more challenging. For the hiring bar, I’m sure you’ve seen it as an intern too. There’s a spectrum of technical skill on each team. If you consistently want strong performers you need a reputation for paying well so the candidate pool is strong. Instead, the pool is weak - the strong candidates that do apply reject our offers for higher TC
We got a hotshot here who thinks the bar is lower and they are the only ones who is smart in the company now.
I actually said the teams have a spectrum of technical skills. There are plenty of strong engineers here.
If you like to do absolutely nothing and sleep at the desk, it’s for you. I like to be challenged constantly so not for me and I left. Also my team at MS was super dull and old. My team at amazon is young and fun and the work is also exciting.
If you want rest and vest, Microsoft is good. If you want to work with top engineers and get paid TC in the top brackets (which are related), you want to move on. It’s frustrating if you’re ambitious and some of your coworkers aren’t doing jacksh*t and we’re all getting paid about the same.
If you want to vest and rest, Microsoft is NOT a good place to be. Each year we are evaluated based on our impact to the company. To “vest and rest” you’ll need to BS your way out of each of your Connect. It’s much more fulfilling to deliver impact and get good reviews, yearly bonus rewards, yearly stock grants, and promotions. With that said, we have > 120k people, there will always be some slackers. Not in my org, though (field).
Well. It’s a big companies and things are very different between orgs. I have been here for 4 years and I see few people regularly doing substantial amount work. Maybe like 80% are in rest and vest mode. They joke about not doing anything and still getting paid so much money. Their managers are unwilling to evaluate them harshly for whatever reason.
Whenever we join some company, we think to leave it. Common for everywhere
