Why are there so many Indians in tech?

(Reposting since I typed this out on a monday blues day so wish more people read my awesome analysis 🤣😄) In 90s indians were good at math and english. Government subsided education and even private college education was cheaper because india was a poor country and parents paid for education. Other countries like china lacked English education and were also not near west. Also china focused on manufacturing. Most of other Asia like Japan and korea were busy with electronics. Thailand was probably doing tourism and manufacturing. Muslim world had oil so they dint need to study hard. Many countries including Pakistan had dictators so too much trauma to do anything meaningful. Some of South America was busy with drugs. Some like Argentina did do computers but they were small population. Europe was too rich to care substantially and also most of time they stayed back in europe and became owners rather than engineers. Only ukraine and Romania cared but again they were tiny populations. Some folks in 90s Bangalore took some initiative and created Nascom which worked better than many other govt organizations. Tcs wipro Infosys tutored people with basic math into software jobs. The Mnc employee pampering culture was unheard of in india. The dollar rupee conversion rate was awesome. IT sector to some extent was able to function without solving basic infrastructure problem of india because a lot of it was either about importing bunch of computers or flying people to abroad. Soon the money success induced folks to enter the coding juggernaut. It started in south. Up until 2002 2004s i remember some didi bhaiya would go to some "south india college" for engineering. Eventually the whole country caught the bug. Engineering colleges mushroomed. You have to understand that 90 percent of work is boring mundane in software. It was even more so earlier. Testing qa dba were dumb jobs. The directors you meet today solved replace a link list pointer to get jobs and then did qa management to eventually become directors and vps. 🤣 Eventually and especially post 2009 tech started paying. It used to pay like 90k in 90s 2000s but especially 2015 and above tech salaries ballooned. This especially happened all because of Softbank who convinced some dubai sheiks in putting their oil money to software. This created astronomical salaries with startups vying for talent. And that is when world started noticing tech more dearly. But things are changing fast. I know today American high schoolers consider coding as a career. They are better programmers than many engineers out of India. Eventually it will dilute and you would see less of indians in tech and especially in usa as salaries back home are catching up. But the Indian generation of 90s millenials and some extent genz have benefited from the tech world. We are the blessed generation. I grew up poor in a no name town of india. My parents were educated but made hardly anything compared to businessmen or government employees. Had it not been tech I dont know what I would have been doing. I remember I did not even have enough money to travel to Bangalore for interviews. It was always some tech company paying for my relocation and tickets. Today I earn 500k+ and have been earning relatively very very high salaries for last 15 years. It might be low for some blinders here but honestly it's more money I could have ever imagined. So that is the reason my friend you see so many Indians in tech.

Shouldn’t you be working right now to justify the 500k salary you are earning

1.5 B to be exact

Stripe fdKy47 Mar 6, 2023

There are 1 billion Africans and 1 billion Muslims, how many are in tech?

NVIDIA pMAc01 Mar 6, 2023

Missing the population variable.

Google ApYc06 Mar 6, 2023

There’s 1 Indian and 1 Chinese for every 5 people in the world. Don’t need to read your paragraphs.

eBay nabana Mar 6, 2023

If so show me the same diversity in oil rigs or nurses(not doctors) , teachers, agriculture etc

Stripe fdKy47 Mar 6, 2023

They don’t open the opportunity, otherwise Asian can take them all including the president, senators, generals and billionaires. Chinese farmers can replace American farmers easily with 3x productivity if not 30x depending on how you define productivity.

Not reading all that, congratulations or I'm sorry that happened

That's dumb to assume that everyone hires their own. Specially in tech. Specially indians. If anything indians hate indians. The thing is while growing up no one knows what they want to do in their life neither do their parents. There are multiple other examples. In 80s a lot of American women wanted to be airhostess and there was a trend which lasted for a while. Even from India people from punjab immigrate to west to drive taxis and dominate that industry because someone they know does the same. Same way why gujratis own motels. Same ways why all countries adjacent to Japan do electronics so well.

Watch "spelling the dream" on Netflix. it explains the phenomenon. My parents came in the 70s when there was a need for doctors. US Government recruited the best and the most educated since 1965 to help the US become what it is today.

Indians are in tech mainly because of nepotism. Indians will allow anyone to get a job only if he is Indian. I know some people will be very angry but thr truth must be voiced.

Amazon duebsi OP Mar 6, 2023

Haha. With this shit victim mindset and need to find conspiracy theory in everything you are not doing much in your life bud.

Cisco warriors1 Mar 6, 2023

I knew it will come. I'm not a victim, made 950k last year but the truth should be voiced!

Indian manager only hire Indians. I went to some company’s IT department. Almost all of them are Indians and they don’t even speak English. That made me feel very uncomfortable. What happens to diversity? It is good thing that we have GC as a gate keeper. Otherwise it would be all Indians.

Google ApYc06 Mar 6, 2023

Lol if you were at a place where the entire IT department doesn’t speak English, it’s more a reflection of your skills than that place.

Siemens yUSF75 Mar 6, 2023

I would think that with this many layoffs, the immigration agency will start to have a close look at the H1B and GC application all together. It is really hard to believe that we can not find Americans who can perform the job
