'Hindutva': The Radical Hindu Ideology That Seeks to 'Push Christianity Out of India’
They weren't enslaved, a lot are 1st generation from Mexico or central/ South America. They have a relatively high population for a minority, they have their ethnic history and identity intact, some of them can pass for white looking, and most of them have big nuclear family support structures... why do they get special diversity points and benefits over poorer, smaller minorities from places like the -stans, Bangladesh, Laos or other places in Asia?
It's the idea that cultural diversity is desirable. Different backgrounds and cultures lead to different viewpoints and perspectives that have shown to be beneficial for business. Unfortunately it's hard to quantify "culture" so race is a good proxy.
People from the same race also have many different viewpoints and perspectives. Race isn’t a good proxy, it’s a racist one because it just leads to generalizations.
Assuming that race has anything to do with one’s way of thinking is called what?
I think the question should be “why diversity is a requirement in specific area”? No bias on Hispanics. US overall is diversified, and benefits a lot from it. But can you imagine diversifying NBA? Or diversifying congress?
Woah woah woah, diversifying Congress would be probably one of the best decisions that could be made. You're gunna trust a bunch of white 60 year old rich white dudes with a metric shit ton of privilege to make legislation on people's healthcare, *fair* taxation, women's issues, rights/ assistance for the poor or disabled or elderly or veterans? They can't compute the different pain points each of those groups has, they have no basis whatsoever for relating to these issues. More diversity in Congress would 100% help the nation become stronger and more robust
The examples you specified are completely different. You work on and develop skills well before actually joining the NBA whereas becoming a good Congress person is something you do after you get in with the network you expand and just getting used to the job. You can't exactly distinguish how well two people may do in Congress as opposed to how two people may do in the NBA. Since people customarily vote based off matching ideologies, diversification of Congress makes sense
I'm a Hispanic. I got diversity points because I'm the only one in my team that can interact with user and most stakeholders. I share a small cultural background with a big part of our users and that gives us advantages when I combine my insights with the ones of the rest of the team. Is not so much about being fair. It just makes sense, you can't have a team of only one race building for a huge audience.
Then those skills should be in the job description.
Because they are still a highly under-represented minority in corporate and academic America. As someone already said, diversity is not a about a guilt trip or trying to equate suffering to a number. Not very different to the expected diversity in gender representation.
According to the Silicon Valley index 2/3 of tech workers are immigrants misclassified into US demographic categories from the EEO-1 instruction booklet that underpins all diversity and inclusion programs , making even the statistics for Americans wrong. It doesn’t make sense to apply US demographics to an industry that recruit outliers from around the world.
We didn’t cross the border, the border crossed us.
That’s only true in soviet russia
Trump is making the border cross your people again. Wow twice in 200yrs, it’s a miracle.
Diversity hires are because different cultural backgrounds have different perspectives, we don’t want a hole in our vision. Companies actually want black people and women and Asians and Hispanics and whites and... I don’t know why some white American males here convince themselves of their own superiority when you know your company wouldn’t survive if it weren’t for the work Visa. I say this as a white American man.
There non-American whites too. Should we hire them to increase diversity? Scandinavians for example? Would Armenians or Estonians be increasing or decreasing diversity? Or do you need senors from Spain?
It might be because according to the Silicon Valley index 2/3 of tech workers are immigrants misclassifies as white or Asian American. We are by far the biggest source of diversity in tech, and that is not acknowledged at all. It doesn’t make sense to apply US demographic categories to an industry that recruits outliers from around the world.
They have votes
Diversity is not about guilt trip or social status. All management want is a good statistics to prevent law suits or bad PR. Nobody cares about -stans, etc.
