Why do nobody talk about the opportunity that RTO offers?

Truth is, most people are average. Don’t confuse talent (meaning employees) with talent (people above average). I keep seeing posts about how Apple, Goldman, and other companies talking about how they will be losing talent with RTO. What about “this is an opportunity for those who may have been passed over prior and want to meet the criteria” to have a shot? When one door closes another opens. I feel like nobody talks about those who are hungry and wanting to make sacrifices.

So you're in sales?

Pegasystems OldRep10 OP Aug 31, 2022

What if I told you I wasn’t? What if I told you I was?

It means for tech roles your opinion on RTO is irrelevant due to your entirely different experience.

Disney UifS30 Aug 31, 2022

Are you saying that when the real talent (above average) leaves, there is an opportunity for regular employees to level up? So the quality of the workforce goes down at that company?

Geico LosSouls Aug 31, 2022

This.

Pegasystems OldRep10 OP Aug 31, 2022

You assume most are real talent. The laws of standard deviations would like to have a word with you

Geico LosSouls Aug 31, 2022

Most people are nearly average. Hungry people, willing to make sacrifices were already getting their monetary rewards before covid. I'm not seeing the RTO connection there, unless your company isn't measuring your output at all

Pegasystems OldRep10 OP Aug 31, 2022

RTO will lead to the departure of employees from companies. This allows others who maybe didn’t get offers originally a new chance for that position should they be willing to work in office

Geico LosSouls Aug 31, 2022

So you're just saying attrition is good. Amazon and Jack Welsh would agree. And the Hunger Games (no sarcasm, the premise is the same). I'm not sure if those remaining employees work harder or are overwhelmed with the brain drain

It’s not a popular opinion but you’re right in most ways. How many people actually think they’re average or below (unless pip)? Most people think they’re at least good, but the definition of average implies most people are not good+. People who say anything less than 100% wfh is a waste of time either only solves very individual/siloed problems or doesn’t interact heavily with a larger organization. Yes some managers only want RTO because they’re insecure and micromanage, but 100% wfh also negatively impacts efficiency, ramping, retention, growth, etc. Blind is skewed towards TC chasers but in reality, many people do stay because they like their boss and coworkers. And problem is if RTO is only voluntary, it’s not as effective if people don’t go on the same days. Now don’t get me wrong, from an individual POV, wfh is awesome. I still think RTO shouldn’t need to be all 5 days.

This is what I wanted to say but since I’m “a sales rep” apparently I cannot connect my thoughts to words appropriately. Bottom line, there are those out there that will make the sacrifices for these jobs but no one wants to admit to it. Goldman Sachs will always have a fresh crop of new grads that will move to wall st for work. Apple will always have engineers who will move to work in office. Nobody is special. Everyone is replaceable.

I've worked at 3 places in last 12 years, all of them had distributed teams with no more than 1-2 people from my direct team at same office. This story about everyone needing to be in the office only reflects the workplaces where whole team is in same location and not the larger globalization trend. This applies to every level, not just IC.

If enough companies start mandating it, attrition won't even be an issue. The demand for WFH roles will exceed supply and at the end of the day, you're gonna need a job so you'll take what's available.

This all or nothing view on it is so shortsighted

Best Buy BBoyz Aug 31, 2022

A whole lot of talented people who don't live on the coast are getting freed up to work with top tier companies and NOT uproot their families. I think you'll do a lot better as a manager making the most of the multiple orders of magnitude increase in your potential talent pool than you will promoting mediocre brown nosers in convenient zip codes.

Yo sales better listen to HR…somebody not meeting his sales numbers?

Pegasystems OldRep10 OP Sep 1, 2022

Lol that is a wild assumption to make here. I don’t see where that came in to play. This caters to also new grads and those looking to transition into the workforce or different industry. Keep kicking tires
