Why do people think there's more money in tech?

I feel like other professions make way more money than software engineers and also the interview process is easier. According to Glassdoor, average salary of a chef in Paris is 93k whereas average salary of a software engineer is 50k. Do software engineers make relatively more money only in US? Even in US, tech is not even in top 20 professions: https://www.investopedia.com/personal-finance/top-highest-paying-jobs/ TC 165K yoe 1

No, people on blind are narrow minded. They don’t know how much other professions make

Amazon bagger Mar 5, 2023

They don’t make much (relative to FAANG SWE) unless you’re a lawyer, doctor, or in big finance

Don’t know much about Europe. But big tech companies in US are in a league of their own … even if you start today. Senior SWE are paid more than (many) Wall Street traders. But it’s not true of general SWE TC in the country.

Well data dog senior engineers make that as well at meta and the like.. and more

I make 1M+ at mid-30s with a not too stressful job.

Tech does have the most annoying interview process of almost anything. I dream of leaving tech in a few years for something else

Meta 👋 mate Mar 4, 2023

Yea sw fit the investment and effort is the best paid profession in the us bar none.

Abundance of jobs is the key, and which you are missing in your comparison. There are far more swe jobs than chef jobs in Paris, for eg

Amazon xxx6969 OP Mar 4, 2023

If number of swe jobs are more, shouldn't the wages be higher because there is more demand?

Meta Qiuy84 Mar 4, 2023

There's so much more money in swe that you can have more jobs with far higher pay

Tech is the easiest out of all the paths to make money. Learn programming & Leetcode. If you like it, then you’re probably good at it

True. I’d make more than my measly 350k if I was a plastic surgeon. But plastic surgeons need a bachelor’s, go to med school, and then six years of residency training and multiple certifications before setting up shop. I’m a college dropout that doesn’t swim in blood and gunk all day.

Lets get a few things straight, it depends on a few factors: 1. Tech companies include a lot of roles. Only a few roles have high TCs (SWE, MLE, App Sci, DE, Data Sci, managers of these roles, Product Manger - Tech etc). Remaining roles are mostly as per market or little above that. 2. If you compare average/ median salary of doctors VS that of Software Engineers in the US, number is much bigger for doctors. But, if you compare top tech senior and tenured positions VS senior doctors in critical medical fields, number is bigger for SWEs. 3. SWEs dont make insane salaries in all countries. Probably only the US, India, Switzerland etc. Whereas some other professions (eg. doctors) make big bucks almost everywhere in the world.

How come nfl starting quarterback isn't on the list? Also many of those jobs start off with a decade of low pay learning the skill and a ton of debt.

Do you think it’s easy to be a chef?

Amazon gspo Mar 5, 2023

Yes. I cook food almost daily

Amazon ru25te Mar 5, 2023

You can’t cook food almost daily if you’re a chef. Need to cook all the time, and people need to want to pay you for what you cook
